At what age do should we start taking our DC's to the Dentist?
I was just wondering because I so dread it. The doctors visits are no fun cuz he screams his head off so I can't imagine a dentist visit being any better.

i started taking my girls at 2. i take them to a ped. dentist that seemed to make a diffrence/ i took them to a reg one and they just didnt seem to be very accomodating or patient with kids.

I read somewhere that you are supposed to take them when they get their first tooth but that seems ridiculous....

I asked Ped at Gs 15 mo visit b/c the kid has friggin 11 teeth already. She said as long as I am brushing them and there is no yellowing, grey spots or chips to wait until 2 or 3 before bringing them for themselves. She did recommend (if I have a good dentist) that maybe he go once with me when I get a cleaning or something so that he can see that it does not hurt.

DS is 3 and will be going for his first appt in 2 weeks. He's had 2 wellness checks at his daycare since he was 2 yrs old.

Yeah I heard that, then I spoke to a pediatric dentist (on a social occassion, not a dental visit) and she said they recommend you take them at 1 yr. DS just turned 2, I have not taken him yet, but plan to in the next couple mos.

the reason why they tell you that is b/c the dentist will go over with you a TON of information regarding Preventative measures besides checking their teeth and gum tissue. To the untrained eye you may think the teeth are ok when they are not. If you see brown- too late.
At age 2 it could be too late.
Cant tell you how many 2 year olds we see with cavities on the back molars and baby bottle rot and more than half have to be sedated or papoosed. Not fun.
Its more the parents that dont feel comfortable bringing in their children before 2 or even before 3 for the sheer fact of the childs behavior, or what the parent presumes how the child will react.
Read to them my first dental visit book, Dora goes to the dentist book etc. and it will help them a great deal.
If its your first child you want to go as early as possible. Then with siblings you will have the knowledge on how to properly take care of and know what to do to be preventatively for them.
Dentistry is very different than when we were kids. much better
