As a middle school teacher and a parent to a 9 week old (swine flu)

I am SO incredibly torn about what to do about getting the vaccine. I do not trust the vaccine as of now, so I am scared to get it. However, I am equally, if not more scared not to get it for the sake of my daughter. I am wondering what others in the same position are doing or what others would do if they were in my shoes . . .Chat Icon

Re: As a middle school teacher and a parent to a 9 week old (swine flu)

I am in the same boat.

DH sees hundreds of people each week at work(restaurants)...

if he gets it he's bringing it home to pregnant me and my asthmatic toddler.

It hasn't been tested enough on pregnant women for me to rush out and get it...and I won't give it to my kid and not get it myself.

we have been using hand santizer like nuts.

Upped our vit D.

Vitamin D will keep you from getting it this year.
I am not getting it.. despite the mandate placed on the healthcare workers. I have an asthmatic son, and a 5 month old as well. My husband and I are both nurses and we have never gotten the flu shot. and we have never gotten the flu. THere is no guarantee with this vaccine.. it's too new for me.

We arent the usual "flu shot" type either....

But DS started preschool this year...we have 5 older children who are all school aged...and DH is a middle school teacher.

We are definitely considering flu shots this year as well...although we would have to do so outside of our comfort zone.

I am with you on this. So torn, just tears me up inside. My DD Is old enough to get it, (10 mths) but I declined the regular flu shot as well.

It's such a very hard decision.

I was just at the doctor today. She said they are recommending getting the regular flu shot, but not the swine flu shot. So I got the regular one and will not be getting teh swine flu shot. To me, the chance of something happening with the shot is far greater to me than not getting it.

Is there a way around it???

As of now, i'm mandated to get it. I always get the regular flu shot (though i didn't last year b/c i was PG and just didn't want to) and plan to get THAT one b/c i work in a hospital and dont want to bring anything home to DD. I'm usually very PRO vaccines, but i'm just not comfortable with this one at all Chat Icon

I am a teacher and I do not feel comfortable giving my son the swine flu shot or getting it myslef. It is too new for me to trust. I also heard many dr.'s NOT recommending it. If there is this much of a difference of opinion among doctors, I personally would not even condsider it. I have def been much more careful about washing hands, etc.

Our ped. said the same thing. so we did the same as Rachel. The reasoning was the swine flu shot is too new and they dont know the risks/side effects of it at all.

It was my doctor. She doesn't feel comfortable with how quickly the vaccine has been put out. And because of what she said, I don't care if my ped. says to give it to Ava or not, I will NOT be giving it to her, either. But if I know my ped. like I think I do, he will not want her to have it, either.

I commute into and out of NYC every weekday...DS is in daycare but my decision was to get only the flu shot and not the swine flu shot. It's too new to allow my son to have and testing has been very limited on pregnant women so I don't feel comfortable.

We will wash hands and watch for symptoms...much like the first time around and hope was are as lucky as that time not to get it.

I am not getting either or giving it to DD. I work in a school AND we will probably be going to Mexico in May.

I just do not feel comfortable with the "rush" involved in it at ALL.

What does vitamin D do for flu prevention? I am looking at anything that will help us-- I am a teacher too and DH is a cop.

Regular flu shots for all. No swine flu shots for any of us right now. NEVER for Abby. I might reconsider for myself.

My ped said if you plan on the regular flu shot for DD then you should get the swine flu shot too. That being said, I don't plan on giving it to her.

First, neither DH or I have had the flu since we were little, little kids and we have never gotten a flu shot before and obviously have been fine. However, this year we will get them to be safe and I will be giving DD the regular flu shot too but we will NOT be giving her the swine flu shot. I feel like the vaccine was rushed out fast and nobody knows for sure if they will be any side effects or long term issues from it. I just don't want to take the chance with my DD. She is a year old, I'm a SAHM so she's not in day care and most of the time in the winter we're home so I think she will be okay. I am just not 100% about the swine flu shot and because of that I don't feel good about giving it to her.

We are not getting either .DH and I have never gotten flu shots and DS we are siginficantly delaying vaccines and choose not to add this to the mix.

I have heard the same thing about Vitamin D and someone can correct me if I am wrong but if I have ti stragiht they said the people that have died from it all seemed to have the common trait of being vitamin d deficient. tHey said even if you get it taking vitamin d ca nhelp lessen symptoms. I beleive overlal they said keeping your vitamin d uptake might be able to provide some protection.....I am paraphrasing but those were the points I remember....
