Article in Allure (October 2007 issue) about Brazilian Straightening...

and the dangerous levels of formaldehyde.
I mentioned this numerous times on the board, but nobody seems to care. If you are interested in having your hair brazilian straightening you should definitely get this issue of Allure!

Thanks Julz - the formaldehyde is the reason I won't be doing it.

According to Cactus Salon they will soon be getting in a new formula of the brazilian straightening that does not contain formaldehyde.

I don't know a lot about this topic but I have a question - is this the same as Japenese straightening and is there formaldehyde in that treatment as well?

I didn't read the article, but I know there have been deaths related to the Brazilian Straightening in South America. One of the girls on another messageboard I belong to is Brazilian and was giving us some insight on the treatment.

I really do not mean to be stupid.. but why is it bad if it does contain formaldehyde? It's toxic on your hair?

I didn't get the magazine yet.... but formaldehyde is carcinogenic(sp?). I think it can be found in many beauty products but some of the brazilian straightening products have contained high (illegal) amounts of it.

Yes - the allowed level of formaldehyde is 0.2%. What Allure found was many salons said their products had no formaldehyde or the allowed amount of formaldehye but when they tested the products the results were alarming. The levels came back at 3.4%, 3.7%, 5.4%, 7.24%. And since the hair is ironed with the product on the hair, fumes are released and the fumes could be deadly. At least 1 person died in Brazil.

If a salon is saying their product doesn;t contain formaldehyde, they are either lying or misinformed. A level of formaldehyde at 0.2% won't straighten hair so there is no "safe" version. And Keratin doesn't straighten hair. The magazine claims that the keratin story is a marketing story, and my professor who has worked on hair care for over 20 years agrees that keratin cannot straighten hair.

Be careful girls!

An email I received from T.Carltons Spalon:

We have received many telephone calls regarding such treatments. We feel that we have thoroughly researched this topic and feel that for the welfare, health and safety of our clients we will not be performing such service. Our research has resulted in this decision based on the following findings:

• Currently ALL available products contain a low percentage of Formaldehyde which is considered a “probable carcinogen” by the EPA.
• Formaldehyde can irritate the eyes and lungs if the fumes are inhaled.
• Currently ALL available products cannot provide proven long-term safety specs.
• Currently ALL available products have been restricted by OSHA to perform the application utilizing a spray bottle. Application must be done with a bowl and brush so as to not affect or gain contact with anything or anyone other than the hair of the individual receiving the service.
• Currently ALL available products must be “flat-ironed” into the hair with an iron that reaches 450 degrees, therefore creating a more gaseous environment.
• Currently ALL available products must be applied by utilizing a ventilation mask by both the client and the operator.
• The FDA does not regulate cosmetics but OSHA has set guidelines that in the workplace there be no more than 0.75 parts formaldehyde per million in an airborne environment over a period of eight hours.

In addition to what has been listed above, please understand that T. Carltons and many other fine salons around the world have been removing all Formaldehyde based nail polishes and cosmetics from their salons and spas for the past five years to ensure the safety of their clients, why go back now? Remember Develop 10? They had to eventually remove the Formaldehyde. These products have been removed for a reason.
The following services can be offered to you with a feeling and sense of integrity on our part:
• Bio-Ionic Thermal Reconditioning Treatment
• Silis by Framesi Silis Retexturizing Treatment
• Mane Tamer Retexurizing Treatment
