Are they kidding?!! Empire ins is dropping Stonybrook hospital?!!?
I got a letter that as of August 1st Stonybrook will not be an in-network hospital for Empire.
How can this be!?!!?
How can Stonybrook afford to not accept one of the biggest ins compnaies out there??
SB is less than 15 mins from my house!!!!

Someone posted this last week. We got this letter too. It is SO obnoxious!
My ped has rights at SB and St. Charles, but St. Charles doesn't have a ped ER and is SO far from us too

USUALLY this is all politics, like the hospital is refusing to pay what the ins. co. is asking so they send these letters to the members who in turn call up in an outrage and someone ends up giving in. I know it happens all the time with my hospital. I would think that would never go through, Stony Brook employees have Empire as well so it wouldn't look very good if they dropped their own employees!!

Yeah, it could never happen. The hospital would fold without being able to take anyone who has Empire.

I got the letter today. It said they would accept you on an emergency basis only. But anything elective would have to be at one of the other hosiptals listed.

We got the letter too. I am hoping that it changes because it says they are still discussing things so hopefully they will come to an agreement.

There was an article (a far to small article in my opinion) about this in Newsday over the weekend...
Blue Cross Blue Shield is in negotiations with these hospitals (yes plural) and if they don't work it out, they are dropping STONY BROOK, SOUTHAMPTON, EASTERN LONG ISLAND AND PECONIC BAY MEDICAL CENTER....it said all coverage would be out of network, except for emergency care...

I guess the hospital isnt happy with what Empire BCBS wants to pay IN NETWORK...
It's shocking what healthcare is coming too it really is...
Of course they can still take you on an emergency basis b/c Empire is bound by, I believe, State Law to pay In Network when it comes to emergency care...
It's a revolving door...The whole thing needs to be reformed.

I called them today, luckily my plan has is a "no network hospital" so it wont affect me. The person I spoke to said that this happens often with Stony Brook. They drop out for a month and then they rejoin a month later. He said not to worry at all.
ETA: Maternity coverage wouldn't change.

We got the letter today too, and I heard about it a few days ago on here too Hopefully they work things out ASAP!
I delivered at St. Charles and it's closer to my house than SB, but I do like having options so close by!

I am assuming that this means that doctors that you see @ the hospital are not in network anymore either?...really sucks

The funny part is I work for Stony Brook and Empire Plan is their main plan for employee's. This sucks!

The employees at the Hospital for Special Surgery in Manhattan can't use their insurance at that hospital. It is NOT unheard of for medical personnel to have to go elsewhere for medical treatment.
I'm still waiting for my letter - although I've known about this for 4 months.
