Are there any stores open today?
I just tried calling 1 and there is no answer 
anyone know if Macy's is open?

that's the only store I KNOW the hours of today LOL! they're open till 3pm. at least the one in Holbrook anyway.

Found this on the Simon mall website:
Roosevelt Field will be closed Easter Sunday, April 8, 2007.
AMC Theater, Grand Lux Cafe, Houston's, Legal Seafoods and X Sport Fitness will be open.

I know BB&B by me in NJ is open till 5. I guess it depends on the individual store.

I always volunteered to work on Christian holidays. No problem here. Some people don't mind it even if they do observe. I won't work on the high holy days but my Christian co-workers have no problem with it. Also, I don't recall ever seeing all stores closed on the Jewish holidays. In fact, most stores don't even have abbreviated hrs aside from the Kosher markets.

only in NYC (jewelry exchage, etc) & in Israel will you find any stores closed on Jewish holidays.

Ever since I have been a member of the workforce, I have never been given off for holidays belonging to my faith BECAUSE they belong to my faith.
As a teacher, the calendar allows off for Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur and (the first and last two days of) Passover. But it isnt because the city is being fair to the children. It is my opinion that because there is a large amount of Jewish teachers, administrators and other professionals in the NY School systems. With the absence of those people, the children would be left unsupervised. If those days were not worked into the school calendar, thousands of school workers would be forced to take "personal days" or "floating holidays" as their corporate counterparts do. Parents would have to find alternate means to have their children taken care of.
There are many important Jewish holidays that people take personal days for that many do not know about. Chanukah is not one of them - not even close. Simchat Torah and Shavuot are huge holidays to the Jewish people. My Conservative and Orthodox counterparts, take those days from work to observe.
The standard American calendar may mark these days, but you will never see a national holiday where post offices and banks are closed. I am fine with that as the Jewish people in this country make up a very tiny portion of this country's population. The rest of the world has to function.

Well, I never said we shouldn't be closed for Jewish holidays as well. I think this country has long lost sight of the meaning behind the holidays. They are nothing more than money makers now. We also have lost sight of family values.
I do not only feel that we should be closed Easter Sunday, but every Sunday. Not for religous reasons, but because we need a break. I work 7 days a week. I am a teacher and I have to go out and work a second job in order to pay my bills. I was just saying that we need to slow down and appreciate a day where we "can't do anything" because they are few and far between.

According to Wikipedia, weekends were established based on religion:
"The notion of a weekly rest is ancient. The Jewish Sabbath, known as Shabbat, is from sunset Friday to nighttime on Saturday. The Christian Sabbath has been Sunday traditionally. The weekend as a time of leisure is a rather modern invention. Before the industrial revolution the wage labour force was a minuscule fraction of the population. The day of the Sabbath was viewed as one dedicated to God, not one of relaxation, and strict prohibitions on permissible activities were enacted."
I agree that in this day and age, our free time is often used to supplement our incomes with other jobs out of necessity. I have been there myself. Sometimes we make sacrifices we wish we didn't have to. BUT IMO, to impose a day of rest on others by law, doesnt seem very democratic to me. I think should be up to the individual person or family to determine how and when they "rest." The interpretation has changed to the modern day "time of leisure." That is why I drive on Saturdays and do not feel bad about it.
As for the holidays, if the majority of people in a country or a community are not going to work because of their faith, it makes logical sense to shut government offices and/or businesses down or they will simply not run efficiently.
