Are allergy tests for 2 year old children valid?

My daughter is 2.5 years old. I saw an ENT for some sinus issues she is having and I mentioned that I wanted to take her to an allergist. The ENT said not to bother, that the allergy tests for children that age are often not valid. Chat Icon

Is this true? Why would a skin test be any less valid for a toddler than an adult?

I have no idea. My DS was tested at 18 months. He has since added more allergies and I am wondering if he lost some of his original allergies. I don't think they are invalid, but allergies can change.

Re: Are allergy tests for 2 year old children valid?

Here's what the allergist/pulmonologist told me.

In a child that young, the seasonal and environmental allergy tests are often NOT valid, but the food allergy tests are.

My DD tested negative for EVERY food allergy. However, if she eats a tomato or citrus, her face blossoms into blisters in front of your eyes, she has diarrhea and horrible diaper rash for days, and she often has asthma issues.

So, I'm not sure if I put any stock at all into any kind of allergy testing for young kids (DD is 2.5).

Well I have had 2 of DD"s peds and my DD#1's allergist tell me (when we brought DD#2 because of a reaction to a bee sting) to bring her at 3 for allergy testing because the results are unreliable under that age.

Yes, this is true for environmental allergies. Your DC can be tested for food allergies and those tests are more accurate. However, a person needs at least 2 full seasonal exposures to develop an allergy...
We dealt with this with DS, we had him tested for EVERY possible allergy under the sun due to his breathing problem. He was diagnosed with RAD.
With that said, given that your DD is 2.5, I don't see why the ENT wouldn't send you to an allergist. She has had TWO full seasons of exposure. Perhaps ask your pediatrician?? Do you need a referal to go to a specialist?
