Anyone's DC have a peanut allergy? Had to rush DS to doctor.

DS has been trying new foods and tends to want anything we are eating. My mom gave DS a little and DS seemed to love it. Then he broke out in hives, became swollen and started screaming. Chat Icon We had to rush him to the hospital.

Is it true that if you don't introduce peanuts that it can prevent peanut allergies or is that just a myth?

I'm sorry, I hope your DS is okay!

I was told no peanuts until 2 years old.

Re: Anyone's DC have a peanut allergy? Had to rush DS to doctor.

I've always been told to not give DC peanut butter or any peanut products until PED says ok. This is what my understanding is that the AAP recommends that peanut not be introduced into a child's diet until at least the age of 3 years. The reason is that the child's immune system may not be fully developed before 3 years, and giving the child peanut butter beforehand may lead to development of peanut allergy. However, this is just a theory -- and one may argue that giving peanut butter every day may cause the child to be "tolerant."

ETA: I've also been told that when children are can't vocalize yet, these "forbidden" foods are even more dangerous because they cannot tell you what they're feeling in their throat, stomach, etc

What exactly did she give him? You're not going to really prevent a peanut allergy if he already has it. The jury is still out on whether anyone can prevent them. I hope he is okay.

My mom smashed 2 peanuts into little pieces so DS could eat them. She said he probably ate 1.5 peanuts total.

I've read contradicting research. I now know that peanuts were a big no no until at least 1yo, if not 2 or 3. Not sure if it would actually prevent the allergy though.

I'm sorry, I don't mean to sound mean or anything, or make you feel worse than you do, but I'd be royally pizzed off at my mother is she gave DD peanuts at that age! IMO, it's pretty common knowledge peanuts are a no-no at that age! Aside from that, I would also have been pizzed that she gave him a new food without consulting me first.

DH and I were both very upset.

She did break up the pieces into tiny pieces. She felt so bad that I couldn't yell at her or anything. DH had told her no berries whatsoever but never any mention of peanuts. Sigh...

What did the dr. do/say?

I always tell whoever watches DD what she can and cannot have.

That way there is no room for error.

Hope he is ok!

Re: Anyone's DC have a peanut allergy? Had to rush DS to doctor.

My DD has it. We found out at 2. The Doctors say no peanuts/peanut products until 2.

DD tasted a sandwich and reacted instantly. I was very hesitant to give it to her in the first place, so I was very upset.

First, you need to find an allergist and get a blood test. The test will tell you what foods he may be allergic to so that you know what to avoid. You will probably need to carry an Epi-Pen and Benadryl with you at all times.

It is a life threatening condition that needs to be taken very seriously and you, DH and anyone that cares for him needs to learn how to read labels and administor the Epi-pen if needed.

I don't know where you are located, but we have an allergist that we love. Let me know if you would like his info.

DD has one. We gave her pb and j at 14 mos and she reacted immediately. We were in the ER 20 min after she started the sandwich! We have to carry an epi-pen everywhere and we are always studying food labels.

Re: Anyone's DC have a peanut allergy? Had to rush DS to doctor.

My DH is allergic to peanuts so I really worry about my kids. Imagine my reaction when my sister overheard me talking to my mom about it when DD was about 2 & my sister said "She could be allergic?! Is it bad that I've been giving her peanut butter cups for like 6 months now?" Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon It seems DD isn't allergic, but I don't know about DS yet. My plan was to wait until age 4 (recommended if a parent has an allergy), which obviously didn't happen with DD, but I plan to follow for DS.

I'm glad your DS is okay. I definately would've been p*ssed at my parents because it is definately well known that peanuts are a common allergy food. Chat Icon

Yes-I agree. There are two different schools of thought. If I was you I would tell your mother not to feed him ANYTHING without letting you know. My son has food allergies and my nephew has life threatening food allergies-let me tell you a story about that.

When he was two years old my BIL gave him a sliver(tiny tiny piece) of lamb which is supposed to be one of the least allergenic foods. He immediately started vomiting and gasping for air. Luckily they had an epi pen and stuck him with it and he immediately improved. I am not trying to scare you but this is so serious.

Everyone around us knows not to feed my son(really my SIL is the only one who would ever feed them since she knows his alergies and since her son has allergies I feel comfortable) We tell neighbors, friends family-NO ONE is to feed our son. If they get offended-too bad. This truly is a matter of life and death.

Some things I would suggest you do:

Get your son skin tested-he may have other food allergies-food allergies can show symptoms in so many ways-I think I remembered you saying he had eczema? That is often food related.

Do not feed him any nuts or nut products-read all labels-you can google for a list of ingredients that may contain nut-if he is allergic to peanut keep him away from ALL tree nuts

Get Children's Benadryl. Ask your Dr but I give my son 1/2 tsp at first and another if he does not respond immediately. This is ONLY for hives. If your child is gasping for air lips blue, etc. You need an epi pen jr.

Get an epi pen-they come in a two pack. I would ask for two sets-one to keep in your purse and one at home. If in doubt stick him. It won't hurt.

Obviously consult with your Dr on all this I am just trying to convey the absolute seriousness of this. Your Mother could have caused him to go into anaphylactic shock.

OK stepping off my soapbox and I am also FM'ing you this.

Our pediatrician told us the exact same thing. You are right on.

He recommended that we go to an allergist when DS is a little older. Your memory is correct that DS has eczema (under control with help of meds).

The pediatrician gave DS half a tablespoon of benadryl, prescribed a steroid and also the epipens to be safe.

The strange thing is that not one person in our families has food allergies. Chat Icon

I'm so sorry that must've been sooooo scary!!!!!!!! Hope your baby is ok.... In your moms defense, I'm sure she didn't know it was bad for your baby. A lot of "rules" have changed form the "old days". Some people dont know certain things. I didn't know you couldnt give honey to a baby under 1 until I read it in a book. No ped said anything to me about it. I would've been a basket case if I ever gave something to DS without knowing it was harmful. My MIL gave DS a baby food with tomato in it at 6 months old. My poor baby threw his guts up!!!! I was so angry at her, but she didn't know and she also didnt listen to me when I said feed him foods only from the lower shelf. The foods on the top shelf are for when he's older...anywhoo but thats different case. I hope all is well now. Maybe your mom has learned a lesson to check with you first b4 giving your baby anything new.
