anyone's child (mine is 11 mo) all of a sudden start screaming like they were in pain at nap time?

for the last week or 2, DS, who is normally a GREAT sleeper is screaming like a banshee before naps and bedtime. i can tell he is tired, but he will scream his head off--it sounds like someone is hurting him and it is LOUD. i've never heard screaming like this before from him. i don't know where this came from or why he's doing it.

he normally whimpered a bit before nap time, but never like this. today it was 15 minutes of this screaming in my arms before a nap (regular time and he was rubbing his eyes--definitely tired) and then again before bed.

i don't know if this is a phase or what. i don't think anything is physically wrong with him. he's not teething as far as i can tell--he's never reacted in pain for teeth at all and he has 7 already.

DS is 11 months old. anyone have any advice or words of wisdom?

It sounds like it is just a phase that will prob stop soon...because it is only happening before bed (naps and bedtime) leads me to think its completely something he's doing from being tired and cranky before he shuts down to sleep..

I bet you anything it ends within a few days or another week max!! And then it'll be a completely new phase that will have you scratching your head, lol!

Hope this helps and I hope it ends soon!! Chat Icon

they learn quick what to do to get what they want. If he did once bc he didnt want to nap and you didnt put him down bc of then he learned "ooh this is how i get out of nap".. so they keep doing. Not saying this is what your son is doing but a possibilty. I say just keep putting him down for nap even if doing but keep an eye on him just in case the scream is something else. I once thought my dd was screaming to get out of nap which she was up until a point.. when I looked at monitor her leg got stuck out of crib.. so scream went from wanting out to pain.

YUP! But luckily only for bedtime. He screams bloody murder, which is why i hate that it's summer and we have the windows open. I can only imagine what the neighbors think (i'm sure they're thinking of calling CPS). Chat Icon

I know he's tired, but he wants to stay up and play. So he's testing us. Unfortunately he's winning and we just go back in and rock him a little bit more and put him down again. For the past month this has been going on.

We usually would have let him CIO, but with the reflux and then trying to get him STTN again... we're picking our battles. Now that he's STTN again and back on his meds, we'll probably let him CIO at bedtime soon.

I think it's just them testing out their boundaries and showing their independence. Chat Icon It's fun right? Chat Icon

thank you for the responses!Chat Icon

we are NOT giving in to him at all. when it's nap time, it's nap time and he has to go to sleep--and eventually does! i will go in there after 10-15 minutes if his crying and screaming starts to get out of control. i don't want him throwing up or hyperventilating in the crib. i usually pick him up, let him calm down and put him back. should i not do that? he tends to still scream after i put him back, but it's a bit less. he will not get out of his nap and i will not cuddle with him for longer than 5 minutes--just enough for him to catch his breath.

i have no problem letting him cry--we did CIO at 5 months and it worked beautifully. i just don't know why he's doing this all of a sudden. i am still making him go to sleep so i hope he realizes he's not going to get out of it.

I can't do that with ds because it only makes it worse, he cries harder once i leave and then the clock starts all over again.

So really that's up to you. If you think it works out better, then do that. Chat Icon

I do do this for bedtime when he fights it. Otherwise he would cry for an hour or so. Luckily we only have the bedtime problem and not naps. For naps, i'd let him CIO. But that's just me. Chat Icon

It sounds like teething to me. My DS was cutting his molars at around that age. Before that, we really didn't have much problems with teething, but the molars were worse and the canine teeth were a nightmare. I don't think I really started using tylenol for teething until around that time. The pain is worse for them when you lay them down.

I never have done CIO, but if I have a hard time getting DS to sleep, I let him scream for 15-20 minutes. He will usually wear himself out. Then, I will go in and rock him in the glider and he will pass out. I really only have had to do this when he has been sick or teething and recently when he was adjusting to a new bedroom.
