Anyone have success potty training a 2 year old boy?

Gavin's pediatrician recommended we start already...he had mentioned it a few months ago. He just turned 2 last month.

Am I potentially driving myself crazy to attempt this?

My BFF's little boy was 2 in July. He is fully potty trained & has been for months. I think it is worth a shot. Good luck!

Is he showing signs that he's ready? I know mine is not, and everything I have read about the subject says to wait until they seem ready. If he's not ready, you could drive yourself crazy. But if it seems like he's ready, give it a try.

It depends on the kid....my son is turning 4 in January and he wasn't ready for potty training until just a few weeks ago, when he just did it. Every kid is different. Give it a try and see how it goes.

Same here. I bought an Elmo potty seat to see what he thought of it and he is SO not interested so I'm just going to wait. I'll ask him every once in a while if he'd like to try the potty and he says "no". My ped just told me last night that this age (just turned 2) is def on the early end for boys so I wouldnt make yourself crazy.

He shows absolutely no signs of interest.....
He DOES walk away to poop though....he deosn't seem to want to be near anyone when he has to go.......but when the potty is around it serves as a toy chest.....Chat Icon

My ped said that the U.S. is so far behind other countries when it comes to this...most kids are already trained by 2.....

Re: Anyone have success potty training a 2 year old boy?

GAvin has been fully potty trained for 6 months so its possible. He's always loved to poop on the potty so it was easier for us. He's been pooping on the potty since he was about a year and a half. We started putting him on the potty to go pee like every 40 minutes at first. Then at daycare they would do the same. Then one day i just said ok no more diapers. he had a few accidents but we would tell him feel how it is to go pee. He then started telling us i have to go pee pee.

P.s. we never used a potty seat..it was regular potty all the way.

I agree with the DR on this one. I started potty training DS at 15 months and at almost 26 mos he is fully potty trained.

I hate when peds are so ready to rush things. Every child is so different. If you feel he is ready then you should do it, if not, do it when Gavin starts showing you signs.

I feel like they just add stress to parents when they say things like this. Chat Icon

Re: Anyone have success potty training a 2 year old boy?

speech therapist encouraged me to do the same.

saying that years ago kids were trained because they did not have sippy cups...just drank from real cups at meals.
diapers these days are too absorbent...

we started at 27 months. finally trained 7 months later.

it only caused stress for both of us.

I completely agree with your doctor. Kids are training later and later largely due to the fact that they are still in diapers and they get into the habit of peeing and pooping in diapers long after they really need them. 30 years ago most kids were trained between 18 and 24 months, so it can be done and is developmentally appropriate. If he is walking away to poop he knows what his body is doing.

I would introduce him to the potty instead of teaching him to poop in his diapers. My son was on the potty regularly before he was 2 and was completely trained when he was about 27 months.

yeah...I rushed it. I wanted him trained now so that I wouldn't have two in diapers but as you can see there were to many "I's" in that idea...he wasn't ready and told me so....cleaning up after him when I'm 6 months pregnant wasn't such a good idea.

On the flip side...he now tells me when he has something in his pull up..correctly. I am pouring on the praise so that we don't fall back to sheer denial when you can smell him across the house. Chat Icon

I think it's worth a try and don't so much regret trying but at the same time I feel like I was forcing it...you know?

Re: Anyone have success potty training a 2 year old boy?

My son showed no interest until the week his baby brother came home lol. he was 2.5. He was the one to tell us that he wanted to try going pee pee on the potty. He was trained (both pee and poop) within a week. What we did was do away with the diapers. We bought a bunch of underwear and rewarded him with skittles and m and ms. we also jumped and danced around like nuts whenever he went on the potty. If he had an accident, we didn't make a big deal but told him that next time, he needs to tell us to take him to the bathroom. Also we kept all errands we needed to run with him short (20 mins tops) so he wouldn't have an accident in the car. For the first few days we put diapers on him only at night. By the 5th day we stopped with the diapers at night and luckily he's never had an accident in bed.

eta: he never took to the kid potty. he would stand on it, put toys in it, etc but never sat on it appropriately. so we bought him a potty seat that goes on the regular toilet bowl and he took to that right away.

Re: Anyone have success potty training a 2 year old boy?

I tried when DS turned 2 and he did not want anything to do with it. I tried again when DS turned 3 (back in Aug) and again he did not want anything to do with it. Now at 3 years and 4 months old, he is just about 100% potty trained because he has interest in it. You can try but do not force it if he is not ready yet.
