Anyone have an abnormal AFP test during pg? Could use your thoughts.
I figured I might get more responses on here from those who had been there and done that...being moms already...so I hope someone can help me out. I had the dreaded AFP test last week. I was already worried about it, due to high false positives. I know someone whose baby actually had spina bifida so it always worried me and my mom's cousin was born with it over 60 yrs ago.
Sure enough I get a result today from my AFP quad screen that says I have a borderline elevated AFP. My dr redrew my blood, and "feels" it's a false +. But of course, who really knows? He says if it is normal on the next one (which we get back next week), then no worries. If it's abnormal, he will send me for a high resolution sonogram, but doesn't feel I need the sono if the next test comes back normal.
Did this happen to anyone and how did you handle it/what did you do and what was the outcome? I am feeling upset and lost right now...BTW, the good news is that the down's portion of the test came back even better than the ultrascreen, as well as the trisomy portion. It was just the actual AFP level t hat was borderline, indicating possible neural tube defects. Please help me out with your experiences. Thanks so much.

My results came back high for Downs and DS was perfectly healthy. Those test have a VERY high false positive rate! Hang in there. I'm sure all will be just fine!

I have posted about this a lot since my friends test came back VERY high for Downs as did other tests they did other than an amnio.
Her DD is fine! Try not to worry! Birth defects in healthy women are very rare!

My dr tld e there are a certain amount of fals epositives necessary to make the test mostly accurate if that makes sense...

My statistics came out higher than usual for Downs. My dr. wasnt worried. She also told me she has seen moms wth normal AFP's give birth to babies wth Downs, so take it with a grain of salt!!!

Thanks for the responses. It's not even the Down's portion of it, it's the neural tube defects portion which is based on the alpha fetoprotein (afp).

Really? Was he referring to the AFP part of if it specifically, or the entire quad screen?

Glad it worked out for you. Did you do anything about this when it came back abnormally high for Downs?

My good friend had a false positive and everything ended up being fine. They have such a high false positive rate-I'm praying all will be fine!
