anyone getting a new digi cam before baby comes?

im looking to buy a new camera..i am in NO WAY a very technical girl with the exception of being online lol...i still cant figure out all of the functions of my IPOD and would never be able to help my son set up his xbox 360 lol...

i hear ALOT of talk about the Nikon D40...its very expensive but the pictures are INCREDIBLE from what ive seen on the parenting board...is this a beginner camera??? anyone have any recommendations for anything else? or this one?

Re: anyone getting a new digi cam before baby comes?

I did alot of research on cameras before getting one pocket-size for myself and one professional one for the hubby.

They both got rave reviews from cnet.com and amazon.com.

Here's the Canon PowerShot SD950IS 12.1MP:
External Image

It takes GREAT pictures and has alot of features including a built in stabilizer so no shaky, blurry photos. And it can also take 30 minutes of video.

Here's the more pricey Canon 40D (high-end, near professional camera that takes excellent photos):

Re: anyone getting a new digi cam before baby comes?

The canon takes the lithium batteries and universal SD cards/CF cards (alot of nonCanon products use these memory cards too). Memory sticks are proprietary memory gadgets used by Sony products.

Chances are when you upgrade, you will need to upgrade your memory stick anyway 'cus as cameras increase their megapixel capacity you will need more memory. I have a 4-8gb (CF and SD) memory card for my cameras but also use them to store music, images, video and documents for my other electronic gizmos...

Sony does make good products but when it comes to cameras Nikon and Canon are kings...

Re: anyone getting a new digi cam before baby comes?

I am definitely getting one!!!! My DH has basically "stolen" the one we own together given as an engagement present for his business. Pisses me off because every time I need it, he's like "oh, my partner borrowed it to take some pics of a job". Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I'm not technologically advanced and will probably only spend $100-$150.00 on something very basic.

If can swing it, definitley go with a DSLR. You'll never regret it.

As for camera/accessories, these are the basics that you will need:

-camera body

-lens (or lenses); you can go with a wide angle-telephoto zoom such as the 18-135mm or stick with more of a wide angle 18-55mm to start off with (which will handle family parties and group shots); and/or a telephoto (for example 55-200mm) for zooming in; great for outdoor portraits

If you can swing VR (vibration reduction), it's worth it

-UV Filter for lens to protect it

-battery & charger

- high speed, medium to high capacity memory card (go with 2GB or higher)

Optional:
-camera case
-extra battery
-card reader

as a photographer, i would never suggest getting a DSLR for a 'starter camera'....

yes, the photos are amazing, simply incredible, however they are VERY, VERY expensive and can be a little frustrating to use at first....

just my two cents!

We just bought a Nikon D60 this weekend...we love it, but I did marry a technology junkie who needs to have gadgets, etc. to play with all the time...we also have a Sony HD camcorder that we love as well!

Re: anyone getting a new digi cam before baby comes?

DH bought a new Sony Alpha a few months ago. He used the new baby as an excuse to buy the new camera. We already had the Canon Rebel xi. I really can't tell the difference and I think it was a waste of money to buy a new one.

I have to politely disagree. I am far from a professional photographer- not even close and the shots I have gotten since I bought my Nikon D50 have people believing they are professional shots. I had no idea what I was doing- basically put the camera on the picture of the child on the wheel at the top to takes pics of DD and took some shots. Pretty simple to me- JMHO...Chat Icon

I plan on getting a new digital camera before the baby arrives. I am looking into the Nikon D60. DH & I both love taking pictures and it is about time we invest in a good camera. Hopefully we will get it shortly so we can get familiar with it first.

ITA> I would def get one if you can afford it. I wish I had one when Andrew was first born. They are very easy to use IMO. I can't wait for this baby to come so I can start snapping awayChat Icon

Re: anyone getting a new digi cam before baby comes?

just to clarify...

a DSLR is a heavy duty camera - the list of things you can do with them are overwhelming.

Yes - they take AMAZING photos...HOWEVER, if you are only interested in pointing & shooting, then why should you spend almost $700 dollars to get a camera you won't be able to use to it's full capability? The point of a DSLR is to use it manually, manipulate the lenses, etc...if you are going to use it on auto the whole time - then a regular point & shoot camera with advanced features should be good enough!

Also - the OP did ask about a 'starter camera'....

I promise - i'm not trying to start drama at all...but i equate it to having a High Def TV and not getting a High Def cable box - what was the point of the large expense of getting the high def TV if you can't use it the way it's supposed to be used?

I'm happy w/ my current Cannon Digi cam...it's less than a year old. I am looking into getting a little flip camcorder though.
