If you want your child evaluated to check for adhd, audatory processing and dyslexia who would you take them to for the best screening? A Neurologist? Or someone else? Want someone very thorough who won't rush to diagnose. I know you can't test until 7 for audatory processing but want to get started now. Anyone know someone in the city who is really good.

There is a highly recommended ADHD program through the hospital system I work in and I was told they won't see a child until around 7.

And definitely not until they complete Pre-K and/or K.

This was from one of the psychologists who runs the program.

A neuropsychologist, is the person to have testing done with for educational based diagnosis. They cost several thousand, but many times the district may cover the cost through an IEE.

There are SLPs that specialize in APD even though your child maybe too young for an official diagnosis, the report can state "suspected APD", and give the school the different methods they should be using to support your child's education. (visual support, proper technology etc).

Lois Heymann is full of knowledge. She wrote a great book, and I had an insightful conversation with her when my daughter was two. http://www.chchearing.org/services/auditory-processing-center I will be taking my daughter there.

APD, dyslexia and ADHD often go hand in hand, as they relate to the sensory motor system.

As far as dyslexia, if your child is diagnosed as having dyslexia, than the school needs to implement a research based reading program and the teacher would need to have the appropriate training. Orton-Gillingham being a popular one, but there are others. This would be stated in an IEP, so you may also need a parent advocate to make sure everything is done appropriately.

You may also want to look into vision therapy, Irlen lenses have helped a lot of children. Believe it or not the ocular-motor component is huge for auditory processing, and attention. So much is based on the vestibular sense.

OK, the way your post read I thought they were going to be a lot younger than that.

Try Cohen's Children's Hospital. They have an ADHD program. And I know you said the city, but it's right on the border of Queens. I will see if I can find and bump the old thread with the contact info.

I believe some of the ladies on here have gone there (or teachers have had students who have gone there) and stated that it's an excellent program.

Very intensive, but really good.

I mentioned the city only bc several people said they tend to have more cases see more and sometimes better qualifications (I know not always). But if there is someone fabulous on LI (Nassau) that is ok too. I want someone not quick to jump to a diagnosis or quick to medicate unless it is really necessary. I figure some on here know the best around.

When I spoke to the woman who runs the program, she said they have someone excellent when it comes to all things medication related. I already posted their name on the other thread.

And FWIW, working for a NS/LIJ system program myself, we have people who come from all over because the treatment they receive is extremely specialized.

Our neuro said that they shouldn't really be reversing frequently in second grade. Since my ds is so young though she thinks it could still be normal. She also said she could help us with it but it's more within the scope of the school. We are going to talk about it more in February.

If you are against going through the school you can always get an outside psychologist to do the testing. You may want to give it a few months depending on your child's age.

Adhd would def be dx through a neuro. We use Dr atluru and she is very parent friendly. She doesn't push medication.

Yes - we went to NYU Child Study Center, and they have offices in both NYC and Lake Success. We used the same Dr out of both offices for the evaluation, weekly sessions were done out of the Lake Success office.
