any moms have surgery WHILE being PG?

i have gallstones (i'm 29 weeks pg) and can't eat anything but soup broth, yogurt, and plain cereal without getting super ill. they're sending me to a surgeon on thursday but everyone i talk to says it's too risky at this point and that the anesthesia is very dangerous too.

any experiences with surgery while pg?

tia!

Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon I'm sorry to hear this. I am getting my gallbladder out in a few days and I can't imagine being in your position. How often and bad are your symptoms? Can you hold off for another month? I know the surgery can be done laprascopically, with small incisions in the abdomen.

I have known many girls that have had had surgery while PG, including my SIL. While the surgeon was near the womb, my nephew kicked that side of the womb as if to say 'Get out!!!' Chat Icon Just trying to get you to smile. Chat Icon

I wish you the best of luck!!! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

lol i could so see my lil one kicking the dr.! he wacks me all day!

i get BEYOND sick when eating anything solid (i though i was going to die after eating a 1/2 slice of wheat pita a few nights ago) and even soup broth gives me pain. every day is awful but i'm not really eating much. my last blood work showed i was slightly malnurished. i try to eat thick soup broth, pudding, yogurt or cereal every 2-3 hours and haven't lost any weight since 2 weeks ago when i was in the hospital but i haven't gained any weight either. Well, doctors are good. If you aren't comfortable with what one doctor tells you, get a second opinion. They are used to helping PG women with all the crap that goes on in our bodies.

I hope you get relief soon!! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: any moms have surgery WHILE being PG?

Unfortunately, I found that it needs to be a REAL emergency to have surgery while pregnant. I had a BADLY ruptured disc in my back from the 10th week of my pregnancy up until...well...yesterday, actually. The pain was so excruciating that I couldn't sleep, couldn't lay down, couldn't sit...

As much as I begged and pleaded, I could NOT find a surgeon who was willing to operate on me, because my condition was not life-threatening. If the gallstones are keeping you from getting the nourishment that you and the baby need, I would say that qualifies as an emergency.

That said, I know a woman who found out she had breast cancer while pregnant. She had an operation to remove the tumor and she was put under general anesthesia. Both mom and baby were ok.

I hope you feel better!!!!

i had my gallbladder out way before i was pregnant, but im my experience, it was NOT a surgery i would even attempt while pregnant..especially in terms of recovery afterward..i threw up for 3 months, everything i ate after..sometimes your body gets "ghost" symptom pains after also..id try and modify your diet while your pregnant, especially eliminating oily/fried/greasy/fatty foods..and go for the surgery after..

i had a bowel obstruction while i was pregnant!! and i opted to "Wait it out" instead of having stomach surgery because of the risk..it was a dangerous decision but it worked for me in the end..
youll be fine in whatever you decide, talk to doctors you trust though, thats the most important thing!!

Hi Michele,

i had surgery when I was 20 weeks prego. the surgery was about 4 hours long. they moved the baby over and cut from top of belly button down. they had to remove the cyst not only because it was huge (size of an NFL football) but they were not sure if it was cancer or not. Very scary!! they told me that after 20 weeks the baby is able to withstand being under better. Please FM me if you have any questions or just want to talk. P.S. Gavin is 18 months old and doing AWESOME!!!!
