Any Long Island Highway Patrol Cops Or Anyone Else Who Would Be SO KIND TO Find This Out For Me?

Hi,

My DH got a speeding ticket on Sunrise Highway He was going 86 in a 55 MPH limit (believe me I've already screamed TONS at his carelessness) He went 31 over limit which means it doesn't show the fine (under 30 MPH would have been $195) and because he is 31 MPH over or above he has to go to court now. I cannot believe this!!

He has a totally clean driving record, first ticket in just under 10 years. He is a stand up professional and we are wondering if anyone has any advice for us as to how to handle this and what the cost may be for going 31 miles over limit? We know about the driver assessment fee already that we have to pay to motor vehicle which stinks too.
Additonally, its 8 points on his liscence and he is already now in the middle of taking the 6-hour online course to get the reduction of 4 points:)

I'd go to court and see if he can get it knocked down to something else...

Was it Nassau or Suffolk?

I have a great lawyer that will get that knocked down (I know I am going to get flamed for this- but you can do that in Nass. so why wouldn't you)

he chagres $100 or $150 to go with you

he took care of a speeding ticket on the meadowbrook for me- I ended up with a failure to signal- no points - just a fine

i just had this happen to me .

i plead not guilty and went to court. i was ready to plead guilty when i got there and ask to get the community service , the $150 fine and 3 points on my licence. but i lucked out the state trooper never showed and the judge dismissed it.

he can try and see if he can do that.

When I was 23 I was pulled over doing 90 in a 55 (yes totally stupid). I had to go to court regardless if I plead guilty or not. My fine was $450 + 25 admin fee and 8 points. This did happen in NYC so I dont know if your DH's fee will be as high, but NYC ALJ's are total harda$$'s and if I didnt plead guilty he would have revoked my license.

I know several people in Suffolk who have gone to court and gotten it knocked down. I've also heard if you bring a lawyer they are more likely to cut a deal. Good luck!

If you go to court the DA will drop it down for you...generally to something with the same fine but no points.
I'm not sure I'd spend the $$ on a lawyer only because I've had it happen to me twice and both times I didn't have a lawyer, but the DA spoke with me beforehand and then offered me a deal.

Thanks for your reply. Because its over 30 MPH (31) it doesn't even tell us the fine, it says he must go to court. Did you go in Suffolk? You do talk to someone before going to the judge? From what I am reading it seems like in Suffolk (at the TVB--Traffic Violations Bureau) you go right to a judge, don't get to talk to anyone and "try to work out a deal", no?
