Another reason to love Amazon
I had a bunch of gift cards left over from my baby shower (random, Visa, Amex, etc)... you can set your own gift card price with amazon and email yourself a GC, i had 3 cards that were not whole amounts... i just did it with 4 random cards totaling a little over $80.
You email it to your self and redeem them all and you can use it towards your next purchase.

i tried to buy an amazon gift card using visa gift cards that i had and it wouldn't go through. what did i do wrong??

Were you buying physical gcs?
I did the email so it gave a code immediately.

I am not following what you did  but it seems like something good!!  Were you able to somehow trade in non-Amazon gift cards for Amazon credit, or something like that??

yes basically.
You buy yourself an amazon gc with a visa, amex, etc GC... have it emailed and you will get a code to use.... if you redeem them all together you can basically combine them all together.
If you only use the code i believe you can only use 1 at a time.
