I never take my hubby's word for anything Chat Icon he's a man, he cant possibly know what he's talking about Chat Icon

anywho.
how do you know if a battery is supposed to totally die out before you recharge it ?

If im going somewhere for the day, I like to have a freshly charged battery so it doesnt die at the wrong moment.
and he tells me I shouldnt do that Chat Icon

In some cases we do have two batteries so we can just swap them out and recharge the dead one, but for the more expensive batteries, isnt that the whole purpose of having a rechargeable--NOT having to buy 2.

so whats the deal with recharging them, do you always wait till it dies out?

I think they recommend that the first time you use a rechargable battery.

Well, I don't know for SURE, but I've heard they last longer if you wait until they are dead before you recharge them....and no one every told me why!

my dh says the same thing. but it shoudl only die completly the first time you use it, ipod, cell phone, what have you.

so technically your dh is right, but once it dies the first time you can charge whenever you need to.

Im not talking about the first time we use it. Im referring to every day. Not brand new items. Like for my camera, I have it with me almost at all times.
so if im running somewhere that I will use it all day, I need it to be freshly charged.

I gotta read up on this too.
thanks for the replies! Chat Icon

Yes it is true, the reason being that batteries have cells. If you wait till they die out completely and recharge it ensures that all the cells are get charged properly. If you constantly just recharge it when the battery is not fully dead some of the cells that never get charged can not hold a charge. That is why after a while cell phone batteries don't hold their charge for long.

Re: ? About rechargeable batteries. Is my hubby right? please say no, LOL.

it depends on the battery:

ni-cad batteries you should use up before recharging

lithium batteries, you don't have to use up.

He's right. I always take back up rechargeable batteries when I know I am going to take a lot of pictures.
