Aaaah, Whining - How do you stop it?
DS has been whining like its his job the past week or so. He has started to become more What will the terrible 2's be like? When he doesnt get his way or it I take something away from him he starts whining and crying. I try to ignore him but he just doesnt stop. He also has been crying more than normal. Usually, when he starts crying over the small stuff it usually means he tired but lately it's been right after he wakes up. I don't see any drooling going on so I'm not sure that it's his teeth but he really has just had his cranky pants on. How do you combat this? Am I doing the right thing by ignoring him? And, when do you use a time out? Do you use it only when he is deliberately misbehaving or do you also use it when you are trying to change behaviors?
Your thought....?

Re: Aaaah, Whining - How do you stop it?
My kid could get all the sleep in the world and he still whines and cries if you take something away from him or if he doesn't get his way. I ignore the whining. Sometimes he stops and moves on. I don't do time out though for the whining. That's only for when he deliberately does something bad. Like the other night he picked up one of DH's notebooks (he's a teacher and uses a notebook to write down his lesson plans) and threw it on the floor. I told him to go pick it up and bring it to me. He always listens and picks up things from the floor that he throws. But this time he was in a mood of not listening. After a few times of asking him to pick it up he didn't do it so I let it go and picked up the book myself and put it back on the coffee table. So what does DS do. He grabs the book and throws it down on the floor and delibrately laughs. That's when he got the time out. Needles to say he wasn't laughing then...
DS is 22 months...

Treat whining as you would a temper tantrum....
Essentially whining is a low key temper tantrum.

Re: Aaaah, Whining - How do you stop it?
uggggh - my son has been whinning so much lately. he is 22 months old now. He wines when he wants something, tantrum when i say no and his new thing is when he doesn't get his way he says he wants to cuddle.... when he throws things on the floor he sometimes will pick it back up after i ask him, when he doesn't i hold his pants so he won't get away and make him pick it up (after MANY times of telling him to.) I am glad to hear that it isn't just my son. I don't do time outs for whinning. if anyone has advice i would love to take it also!!!
