9 month old on a plane....

Hi.
We are taking DD on a plane at the end of the month. SIL said that I should have bought her a seat.
I didnt even think of this....

Would you have purchased your 9 month old a plane ticket????

Others also put their 2cents in and said I should give her Benadryl, Tylenol etc before take off to prevent ear problems. Anyone hear of this?

Any advice is appreciated.

How long is the flight? If it's only a couple of hours I think she is fine being on your lap - I bet she will even nap for you.

Unless she has had Benadryl before I would NOT give it to her beforehand. Some kids have an adverse/opposite reaction to it and it makes them super hyper. Tylenol isn't necessary either, just have a bottle or a pacifier for her to suck on during take off and landing to help her ears pop (or nurse her if you are BFIng). You might want to hold off on feeding her for a few hours before the flight if you can to make sure she's hungry and doesn't stop sucking.

Re: 9 month old on a plane....

When it comes to the seat, I think it depends on how long the flight is. If you are flying across the country, I probably would have gotten a seat and brought the car seat to have DC sit in.

We flew to FL when DS was 7 months and did not get him a seat. Although it was me, DH, my mom and dad so there were 4 of us to pass him around to.

I flew with him again when he was 18 months and got him his own seat because there was NO WAY I was going to deal with having him on my lap.

Is your DC very active? If so, I would get a seat so that you have extra space, especially if it is a long flight. If it's a short flight I am sure you will be fine.

As for the Benedryl, I am of the school of thought that unless there is a medical need for them to have it, I don't give my kids medicine. I would just nurse/bottle feed/pacifier DC on the way up and coming down so that their ears won't be bad.

I flew by myself with my DD when is was 8.5 months. It was a 2.5 hour flight also. I didn't by her a ticket. People also made the same suggestion to me about the Benadryl and Tylenol. I didn't give it to DD. She was great on the plane. I gave her a bottle during take off and she wound up sleeping through landing both ways.

Re: 9 month old on a plane....

I've flown with dd to California (6 months), Florida (7.5 months) and Italy (10 months) and never gotten her a seat... It may have been slightly more difficult, but honestly DD is the type of kid that would have wanted to be on our laps anyways so it was never much of an issue. good luck!

Re: 9 month old on a plane....

I just got back from Chicago yesterday with DH and DS. DS is 8.5 months. I did not buy him a seat, but I flew southwest and you can pick your own seat. luckily no one wanted to sit in a row with an infant, so we had the row to ourselves. DS got his bottle during take off. then sat in the middle seat with the tray table down and played with his toys and then slept on me for landing. going home was a different story. he refused to nap but was exhausted, but his ears did not bother him. i wouldn't give anything, u never know how they'll react. just have plenty of toys on hand for them.

Re: 9 month old on a plane....

Regarding the seat i think it depends if you lo can sit still for long in your lap.

I advise you to buy a couple of new toys for the plane to keep the little one entertained.

Also have a bottle ready for take off and landing to help with the ear pressure

I wouldn't give him any tylenol or benadryl unless it was really necessary for true pain.

I flew with DD at that age to Florida (3 hours) and had her on my lap with no problem. I just gave her a bottle at take off and landing.

Re: 9 month old on a plane....

I flew by myself when DS was just a little over 9 months old. I did not purchase him a seat & things were fine. On the flight there, it was around DS nap time, so he fell asleep as soon as we boarded the plane & slept until almost landing.

Coming home was a complete diseaster. It was not around his naptime & he did a lot of screaming. I would distract him for 10 minutes or so & then he just wanted to get down & not be held.

I did not give him any meds & his ears were just fine. I made sure he had his paci.

A 2.5 hour flight is going to be a breeze! I don't think you need to bring your car seat.

DS flew to the caribbean when he was 10m. We let him watch some wiggles on DH's laptop. He had a blast playing with the window. Just make sure you bring plenty of snacks and you will be fine.
