9 million fewer Americans expected to have health insurance in 2019

...
The individual mandate, one of Obamacare's least popular provisions, requires nearly all Americans to get coverage or pay a penalty. The CBO estimated in November that 4 million fewer people would be insured in 2019 because healthier people would be less likely to buy policies without the mandate in place.
...
The Urban Institute estimated that the mandate's elimination, as well as the reduced federal support of open enrollment, would leave 6.4 million fewer people with coverage by 2019.
...
About 2.5 million people who would have been otherwise insured will opt for short-term policies next year instead, the Urban Institute estimates.

Combined, the elimination of the individual mandate and the expansion of short-term plans will likely cause premiums for Obamacare policies to increase an average of 18.2% next year in the 43 states that do not prohibit or limit such policies, according to the Urban Institute.

So, less people insured, which means they will go to the ER if they are sick, which costs them, hospitals, and taxpayers $$$.
Plus, because of the shift of the burden, those who have ACA insurance will have to pay a lot more, in addition to paying more for the uninsured....

I'm really getting tired of all of this winning.... Chat Icon Chat Icon

I don't think it has anything to do with healthier people not wanting to buy insurance. People that I know who have to buy insurance on the open market, just can not afford it. They are not eligible for subsidies and can't afford the premiums and then the copays on top of that.
For me personally for my bronze level employer sponsored plan, it is 68.50/week and a $6500 deductible. And once I meet the deductible I still have co insurance to pay. So that is $10000 + a year for health insurance. And just as I may reach my max OOP the year starts over. My husband carries my son and that is 148.50/week and a $12000 deductible. $19700+ for insurance. His plan starts in Feb and because my son has issues, we max out in about April and then have no additional costs. But coming up with all that money is no walk in the park. And because we have insurance, no one will work with us on the fees. It's not like we can negotiate anything.

Re: 9 million fewer Americans expected to have health insurance in 2019

Honestly, while I get blaming trump for a lot, he actually doesn’t deserve the blame here. Obama ruined health premiums and insurance for the majority of people, the only people who benefited from Obama’s plan was the super poor, and even then I’m not sure if they used ACA or plans like CHIP, Medicaid, and Medicare etc., so I don’t think they even benefited. But I saw my personal insurance go up from $300 a month to $650 a month, and at that point I was a healthy person in my 20s, and not only did the premium go up my insurance coverage went down drastically. And after speaking with so many people, I truly think that is what the majority of people went through. Thankfully my DH took a different job where we were able to get private family plans, and the difference in price is crazy.

There really is only 2 options for health insurance, and that’s screwing many middle class people and allowing private companies and people who can afford it, along with poor people getting plans through the government. Or by going to a single payer insurance, where everyone gets insurance and everyone has the exact same thing unless they pay out of pocket. But don’t be fooled into thinking the ACA wasn’t absolute garbage.
