I would do a cake at home, with a balloon, and a small present. If families are invited then I would have the grandparents over too. eta: I still have the small stuffed animal from my 6th grade graduation.

Agree x 1000! I think a small immediate family dinner either at your house or at your child's favorite restaurant would also be nice and appropriate. If there is something that you child particularly enjoys, that also might be a nice way to celebrate (a day trip to Splish Splash, Six Flags, etc.)
IMO, there are way too many "graduation" ceremonies (and large-scale celebrations, for that matter) -- kindergarten graduation to 1st grade, 5th grade to 6th grade, 8th grade to 9th grade, etc.

5th grade graduation
No party. Small gift and out to lunch or dinner. Maybe a small cake at home. It's a Rite of Passage and deserves a small celebration IMO.
