For those who have been to J&R's Steakhouse - Need Baptism Help please so actually if any can answer....
If the price was less than bringing in food to a hall, would you have your child's baptism there? Are there any rules for the type of place you should have a christening in such as is a steakhouse appropriate? What about a chinese restaurant? Are places that are good for bridal showers good for christenings too?
how much does it typically cost to rent a VFW type of hall for around 4 hours?
P.S. If my mom doesnt shut up, I'm going to shove a binkie in HER mouth....

OMG i wish someone we know would have some kind of party there! i love their J&Rs marinated steak!
As far as whether it's "acceptable".. imo, it's more about what YOU want and what's your style than what other people might think. We had a keg at our e-party and played turbo cups and beer pong. Other people have theirs at Oheka. Both are great- It's all about your style.

We had DD#1's christening at a firehouse. My dad is a member so we got the room for free (had to pay a deposit and then got it back). We spend a little over $500 on food, but then had to get paper products, drinks, decorations, table cloths, cake...etc. It prob cost us a little over $1000 with everything for about 60 people...which works out to be just about $17 a person.
This time around we are having it at a restaurant in Smithtown. It's a little more expensive $18.95++ but we don't have to worry about the set up/clean up. My family came and spent an hour or two helping to set up the night before and my sister even rushed there as soon as the ceremony ended to meet the caterer. For a couple hundred dollars more we decided to just have it at a place where we can just show up and that's that.
It all depends on what you're comfortable with and what you want to do.

Just crashing...
J&R's actually pretty good for the price for parties. I've known friends who used them for bridal showers before and said they were wonderful and good food, especially considering the low price!

I think J&Rs is perfect. I looked into halls and they wanted $350 to rent, PLUS they wanted $15 pp for food. Then I would have to get decorations, no way.....
Um, if it makes you feel any better, I had mine at a bar/restaurant. Hey, we're Irish/Scottish and like to drink.
I just found out that the preschool (church) rents out their hall for $100. I'm thinking about that for DC #2.

This is now my dilema. I was under the impression that the rental of our community's clubhouse was free. Nope...its $400...now when I add that to the price of the catered food I'm looking at about only $2 more a person to have it at J&Rs. However, my mother the opinion master seems to feel that J&Rs is not a appropriate setting for a baptism...that its too "rustic" and not pretty. IMO those who are not paying should keep their mouths shut Can you tell I'm in some kind of mood......

Re: For those who have been to J&R's Steakhouse - Need Baptism Help please so actually if any can answer....
My brother had his rehersal dinner there and it was really good! Totally would have a baptism there.
We had DS's baptism at John Harvards Brewhouse in Lake Grove so I dont think there is any specific type of place for a baptism. I havent been to a baptism at a Chinese plase but have been to 2 showers and didnt see any problem with them either.
I personally liked having DSs baptism someplace "different' because I felt like every party we went to out was at an italian place and I was just getting tired of it. Also our guests really liked the beer tasting table (even the non beer drinkers)
ETA: IMO $2 is well worth it pp to not have to set up, clean up, get all the supplies ETC!

We were going to do DD#1's christening there before my dad suggested the firehouse. We thought we'd save a ton. We didn't. I've been to a party there and the food was good. I think it's a perfect place to have a christening.

Re: For those who have been to J&R's Steakhouse - Need Baptism Help please so actually if any can answer....
I just had my DS's Christening/1st Birthday at J&R Steakhouse at the Islip location in December. The price was perfect because we were on a strict budget. The church service was 10am Sunday and it ended at about 12pm. We took pictures after at the church and then everyone headed to J&R for 1pm. we had the space from 1-4pm. Islip only has a semi -private room that can only hold 40ppl but that was perfect for us because we did not wait to invite the world (we both have HUGE families). The other locations can hold more people but I am not sure if the rooms are private or semi-private. The service was great and the food was excellent!
Let me know if you have any specific questions.
ETA: the $14.95pp does not include drinks. you can add unlimited soda, coffee & tea for $1.75pp more. We did not do any alcohol, anyone who wanted alcohol paid for their own drinks at the bar that was right next to the semi-private room. so with the 14.95 plus the 1.75 plus tax and gratuity it came out to $20pp. We ended up only having 30 ppl show up so we only paid $600 for the party. Since we were saving so much money by using J&R I splurged on a fancy cake also got cupcakes as the favors. J&R gives you a cake as part of the package but gave us ice cream instead since we had our own cake. They served the ice cream with the cake.

WE HAD PEYTONS CHRISTENING AT J&R'S!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We had it in Stonybrook in the big room. We had a hundred ppl. We were very happy. We got all good feedback on the food and I have NO regrets. We had Jordan's at the Firehouse and brought in all the food etc..., J&R's was waaaay better. SOoooo much less work and stress. They cost about the same in the end. We added alcohol, and appetizer platters at J&R's and it cake with a great cake too.
