Re: 4th grade homework
I was at my sisters last week in NJ. My 5 year old nephew came home with homework (kindergarten) and they wanted him to draw something involving the word "kit". My sister looked at me dumbfounded and I said "First Aid Kit?" she then called me a genius
At least I should be ok when Ry starts kindergarten. After that I put all homework/project responsibilities onto DH.

Re: 4th grade homework
DS is in fourth grade and the homework is outrageous!!! He's doing homework for at least 1.5-2 hours a night, homework every weekend, and a major project once a month. Plus the fact that his math homework is now beyond me.......
As far as the essay... make him brainstorm first. Just write all his ideas about the topic on a piece of paper in no particular order. Then, help him organize them into some kind of order. That's his outline. Help him figure out a topic sentence, and then the rest is up to him. Don't write it for him and make sure the ideas are his. Even if it's not perfect or what you would have written, the teacher will most likely give him an oppurtunity for a rewrite at his age.
Good luck!!

Re: 4th grade homework
4th grade is the hardest. As an English teacher, i think teaching writing is the hardest too.
Edited to add---I just remembered the upside down triangle for essay writing. The top is very broad and it becomes more narrow as you move through the essay closing it with a final, very specific point. Am I explaining this right? Am I making sense? I teach HS English, so it may be different.

Re: 4th grade homework
DH said to have a topic, a closing, and brainstorm the ideas for the details.
You can start him off with transition words "First, next, then, finally"
You can help him with the topic sentence and he will add the details.

Re: 4th grade homework
"in conclusion" was the only thing that stuck with me on how to finish up an essay.
