**Breastfeeding Support Thread**

I wanted to start this because i think its so important for all mothers to realize that BFing DOES NOT come easy to everyone..it takes ALOT of work for some people, and it CAN be accomplished, even in the most extenuating of circumstances..
i hope all newcomers to the Parenting site, and all Pregnancy Board posters will come here with any questions, any problems, any triumphs!!, ANYTHING..having to do with nursing their newborns, infants, and toddlers..

i am by NO MEANS an expert, im just experienced in having a very hard time between latching issues at first, and then milk supply issues through out the last 4 months

i dont mean for this thread to PUSH BFing on anyone, or to convince anyone to do it..i FF as well when needed..i really just think there needs to be an online space for us to come and ask questions instead of having it appear on 20 different threads throughout the board..

i hope this thread gets used by women for a long time to come!!

So anyone reading, if you have any questions, or just wanna introduce your BFing experience to this thread, i really would appreciate it, on the behalf of so many women like me, who could and have used your help!!

Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon
thank you :)

Re: **Breastfeeding Support Thread**

I am here to help anybody through questions and/or concerns they have.

If anybody ever has any questions, they can FM me. I miss a lot of threads due to my weird working schedule.

What are some things I can help with?

-Giving birth to a large baby and BF.
-Being hospitalized and continue to BF
-Medical tests and needing to pump and dump
-Supplementing with formula while sick, but bouncing back to EBF
-Fighting the odds to continue to BF, even when doctors told me to give up
-Slow weaning (I did it over a few months)
-Pumping and working

I am here! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: **Breastfeeding Support Thread**

What a wonderful idea! Having successfully BF both babies (to almost 1 year with one, hoping to go to 1 year with #2) I am here to help as well.

I can help with:
weaning off a nipple shield
pumping
working and BFing
nursing with 2 under 2

Those first few weeks are almost impossible- but once I got over the hump it's been such a rewarding experience.

I hope I can help anyone and I have lots of experience with nursing twins exclusively, and continuing to nurse after being in the hospital with a terrifying case of mastitis.

Re: **Breastfeeding Support Thread**

This is a great idea!!! I'll start with my questions issues! This is truly my last option!

DS was born March 9. He was 5 weeks early. He spend 8 days in NICU due to a lung infection. Therefore they bottle fed him my pumped milk for that time. The first day I got to put him to the breast was the day we were taking him home. He latched on pretty well at first using a shield. But the at home he was on and off. So I pumped constantly. The doc wanted to watch how much he was eating so I started exclusively pumping. I had planned to do this for about a year, even when I return to work. But that might not happen now.
The last 2 weeks my supply has totally decreased that I have to supplement with formula more then 1 bottle.
I drink a ton of water, I have tried More Milk Plus for about a week now with no results. I am gonna try the Fenugreek pills next.

Is it possible I may not be eating enough while trying to lose baby weight?

I am so upset that I just don't know what else to do here.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!

oh, im sorry...im able to help anyone with latching issues, low milk supply, milk coming in very late ( 6-7 days for me) feeding smaller infants with very large ubangi sized nipples Chat Icon (no seriously, it was a challange) lol
BFing with formula supplementation..(which id like to change for my next dc, id like to EBF)

and ill even start off with a funny story...lol

my frist few weeks S U C K E D..no pun intended at all since i couldnt get my dd to latch on to save our lives..
Chat Icon anyway, i started taking fenugreek capsules, and pumping like crazy, and one day at about 3 1/2 weeks, i woke up and my boobs were killing me, which had never happened before since i barely had any milk at first..
i went to nurse my dd, took off my bra, and literally shot my baby in the face with milk from 4 different holes lol i was so excited, i didnt know what to do, had nothing there to wipe her off with..and ended up having to use a pillow on the couch (yuck) to clean her lil face off lolll

and if you read my embarrassing mommy moment thread, you know all about how i ran outside to catch my ds' bus with my nursing tank half down and my bare boob out ;)

i still love it though Chat Icon

You really might not be eating enough. I had supply issues- and during the first few weeks I wasn't eating enough. I wasn't really trying to lose weight, but I really had no appetite. Breast feeding burns a lot of calories; I lost all the baby weight just from that. I wasn't "dieting" but I was trying to eat healthy food and not eat junk. Hope this helps. But for what it's worth, I never had a great supply regardless and supplemented the whole six months I bf'ed DD. Any amount of breastmilk is good.

I agree with this as well. You can not "diet" while BF. You can, and should, eat healthy though! Also, drinking a LOT of water will also help to increase your supply.
How do you know though that your supply has decreased?

At this point, try not to actively work on losing weight. In the very beginning, your body NEEDS those extra pounds to produce milk. Not eating enough will most definitrely cause supply issues as it stresses your body. Eat lots of protein and drink lots o water.

Do you want to get DS back on the breast? If so, I would highly recommend contacting a lacation cumsultant who will physically show you how to get DS to latch.

For now though- I would start using the nipple shield to at least get DS on your breast. The shield is like a bottle nipple, so DS shouldn't fight it too much. At least 1-2x a day, try to get DS to latch without the shield as well.

The problem with the pump and the nipple shields is that they *can* negatively affect milk production- as nothing can stimulate the body to produce milk like a nursing baby can.

I think its a great idea----a thread to come and ask questions/get support! I can help with BF a preemie/changing from exclusively pumping to EBF.

How old was DC when you changed from pumping to BF?

DS was about 4-5 weeks old when I made the change---He was born 6 weeks early and spent 4 weeks in the NICU. He was tube/bottle fed initially and then they let me start to BF him in the NICU 1-2 times a day when he was 3 weeks old----he came home at 4 weeks and I got the go ahead to try to EBF as he had gained back the weight he lost after he was born.
I think one of the hardest parts for me was letting go of knowing exactly how much he was eating. My ped was supportive with offering to do more frequent weight checks to ease my mind (and probably his!). But 15 months later, I am still BF in the AM & PM and he has grown wonderfully, if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask!

You could also start eating oatmeal, it should help your supply. I also agree with trying to get your baby back on the breast if that is something you aren't opposed to---does your ped have a LC or one you can get in contact with.

DD is 4 months and i am currently bfing her. i went back to work at 12 wks and had literally 3 days to get this baby to take a bottle ( i pumped) that was a huge challenge!!

my advice to any new moms looking to bf, introduce your baby to the bottle at 3/4 weeks!

right now, keeping up my supply is a constant struggle. it takes me 2 pump sessions at work to get 6-8oz total.

it is def. a lot of work for me to make a day's worth of milk for her!!

Re: **Breastfeeding Support Thread**

This is a great thread!

My son was born 3 1/2 weeks early and spent 4 days in NICU. I bf'ed him exclusively for the first two days and then I started supplementing with formula as my milk had not come in yet.

When I got home from the hospital I pumped b/c I had not felt my milk come in and I only got a few drops each session. I went to a lactation consultant - who wanted me to use a SNS (supplemental nursing system) - which was a complete mess and was totally aggrevating to use, went to my ob - who told me to accept that this wasn't going to work. I started taking More Milk Plus which has helped but I am still not getting more than a quarter of an ounce between pumping both breasts!

I am going to be trying for #2 soon due to my age so I am not sure if it is worth the battle to try to make this work.

At least he is getting some bm, right?

Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks!!
Patricia

I have the same problem. Every time I nurse poor DS gets soaked because my letdown is so forceful he pulls off & gets sprayed in the face. I try pumping before feedings when I feel really engorged & I am able to pump about 3 ounces in just a couple of minutes... & when I nurse DS still sounds like he's drowning the way he gulps. I had this problem with DD too & it eventually worked itself out. As my supply leveled things slowed a little & as DD got older she was more able to handle the fast flow.

I have this problem. I had my DSs so close together that my milk came in the day after my c-section, and came in huge. I feed DS off of one side to be sure he gets the hindmilk, then I pump the other side & switch every feeding. So far it has been working, and he is a pretty voracious eater.
