Virus in hip? Anyone ever hear of this????
My DS started limping yesterday but showed no signs of pain at all, just dragging his foot. I brought him to the ped today and she said he has a virus in hip. I asked 28 questions but never asked how you get a virus in your hip. My SIL who is a nurse for 20 years never heard of it. She said to give Motrin and call if he gets worse or has a fever but otherwise ride it out over the weekend and see if it starts to get better.
Has anyone ever heard of this?? It seems bizarre to me but I'm not a medical professional.

I have heard of synovitis of the hip in kids----I know that it is thought to be related to a viral illness......I don't know if that helps at all. I hope he feels better soon

It's an inflamation of the tissue around his hip joint. From my understanding they really dont know if it's a "virus" per se or an allergic reaction or something else going on..I forget..it was a long time ago. They told you to call if he gets worse or starts running a fever b/c then it means he doesnt have it and instead has something else...
It's no cause for alarm at all....
Be careful b/c I tried googling it for you so I could send you a link and I wound up with really nasty porn!!!!!! How Hip+Virus got me there I have no idea.

My nephew had this years ago. He was in the hospital for a few days on antibiotics and then came home, he was fine.

YUP!! Same thing happened to my son except he had a 103 fever also. Because of the fever they sent us to the hospital and ran numerous tests. Everything came up negative and they told us it was a virus in his hip..
Weird..I know!

I have. Well, I've heard of viruses in body parts.
I had a virus in my wrist/forearm when I was in college. I woke up one morning, it was Easter morning, and I couldn't move my hand. I had to drive to my parents' for Easter dinner, which isn't easy to do when you can't grip anything with your hand. I went to the ER after dinner, they xray'd it, examined it, and concluded it was a virus. They gave me a wrist brace to wear. It went away in about two weeks, I slowly got my strength back in my hand during that time.

Yeah...I was googling it with my Mother and that came up. Yikes! Seriously, the heck??
Thank you for all the responses. I found a site that called it transient synovitis. It says he may start to experience pain as it continues which makes me so sad, he's really not in pain right now....I hope not!!

My brother had that when he was little!! I think it happened right as he just started walking, and then he couldn't walk because of it, so it delayed his progess a bit.
I don't remember all that clearly because I'm only 16 months older than him....I just remember my parents saying he had a "cold in his leg" and he wasn't allowed to walk. They had to carry him everywhere!
He's fine now. No issues once it went away!

Now I'm starting to freak out a bit. He was very sick back in the Spring with strange stuff that all turned into a 5 day stay at Schneiders. I can't help but get very worried when he is sick esp if it's something odd which he seems to get. Trying not to worry but I'm worried. Holy moly..I have to keep the freaking out in check.
