2 week old to sleep on stomach b/c of diaper rash?

So Luca has a bad diaper rash in his little butt crack. Someone suggested letting him sleep a few hours diaper-less and on his belly with a few pads underneath to catch pee (and changing that out when wet of course). He does love laying on his belly on my chest and seems to have good control of his neck- always lifting off me and moving to the side- but I am still nervous. This person said that for a few hours at a time in the next few days my worry should be his rash and not sids since the rash is here and hurting while sids risk is so low (no offense to anyone who has lost a lo or knows someone). I put him on his belly for a few minutes but got nervous and came online to do some research. For the time being his face was totally on the side and clear of the mattress...

Any thoughts?

I would do it during the day (naps) when you're more alert to watch him.
