16 week bloodwork...

Who had this done??? I believe that it's testing for genetic disorders. I wasn't planning on having it done...but my Dr suggested that I do it. He said he just likes to know what's going to happen before delivery. I have to go by tomorrow...so I'm trying to make up my mind!!! Just wondering everyones thoughts!

Re: 16 week bloodwork...

I wasn't going to get it, because of the high "false positives" but like the dr. explained to me, it doesn't come back + or -, it just gives you odds. If the odds are high he said they can do an ultrasound for further testing - because I don't want an amnio. He said it is better to know in advance because if something is wrong related to the spinal cord it is better to deliver by c-section.
I was very undecided also, but it is just a blood test so I went for it.

Re: 16 week bloodwork...

Is that the AFP? I did it b/c I had the ultrascreen. My MD said, if you go for the ultrascreen, you may as well go for this. I was fine with doing any testing that wasn't invasive.

Re: 16 week bloodwork...

That's the AFP which checks for all the neural tube malformations. I feel like I was more than just "advised" to have it. Had I had an amnio, I would not have needed it, though.

Re: 16 week bloodwork...

The thing is that i DON'T want an amnio and I'm afraid that if I get a 'false positive' I will be a crazy person for the next 24 weeks!

Re: 16 week bloodwork...

My understanding with the AFP is that there is not a high rate of false positives - it's pretty accurate.

The ultrascreen is the test they say has a high rate of false positives.

Re: 16 week bloodwork...

I'm getting mine done next tuesday. I got really good results from the ultrascreen, so i'm a little more relaxed with this test. Just stay positive, and hopefully all will be good..that's my thinking.

Re: 16 week bloodwork...

Any results will be confirmed or refuted by the anatomical sono (Level II), which you have like 2wks after you get the results to the AFP

If I had done this AFP test, I would have known sooner about my little one. Next time I am going to do it.

I didn't realize it would give that much information.

Re: 16 week bloodwork...

I had this, didnt think there was a high percentage of false positives with this.

My Dr who really didnt see the need for much in terms of genetic testing told me to go get this. (I didnt do the ultrascreen)

To me it was just like any other blood test, I mean most people get the work up which include cystic fibrosis, so why not this one? If it had come back positive I wouldnt have done an amnio

It would have been beneficial in my case. It would have told the doctors that the possiblility of spina bifida or anencephaly (what my son had) was there. Then we would have known that the baby's brain wasn't developed. We would not have had a better outcome, but we just would have dealt with the situation sooner.

I was told at 16weeks that this test had more false negatives, so it was an option to take it. I still stick by me not doing the test originally bc I truly didn't feel like it would matter if something was wrong with our child like down syndrome, etc. I had thought it was testing for the same exact thing as the level I, that is why I didn't do it.

It still wouldn't have changed what we had to do for our son, however I just would have known sooner.

Re: 16 week bloodwork...

Oh, and to add, I wouldn't have had to do an amnio in my case, they would have done the sono earlier to make sure of the anencephaly. This is how they caught it in the first place.

I am not trying to scare you, I am just saying in MY case, I will have every test done possible for baby #2-but we have decided we will NOT do an amnio if it is suggested.

Re: 16 week bloodwork...

I had it done, and because of my European backround, I am a carrier for CF. The doctor said that we could have Brian tested to see if he is a carrier or not, but we opted not to.

Everything else turned out normal.

at my current doctor's office i think it's part of their routine bloodwork. they didn't even ask me if i wanted it done, they just said okay now we're going to take some blood to test for spina bifida. i'm fine with anything non-invasive.

I understand what you are saying. I guess it will ease my mind a little. To be honest, I've had so many nightmares since I've heard your story. Thanks for sharing with me!!

I turned it down. I didnt want to hear any false results and I had had enough of testing at that point. I wanted to just enjoy my pregnancy without any added worry.

Re: 16 week bloodwork...

I had the test done because I was unable to get a full ultrascreen.

When I went for my ultrascreen they took the 5 drops of blood, but when the baby measured at 14 weeks and 4 days they would not do the nuchal test.

The blood results were not great so my docotor suggested a quad screen - It's the AFP test with three other screens.

I don't have the results yet.
