Housing prices are outrageous!!! Especially for what they look like inside!!!!!
I really can't get over the prices some people are daring to ask for their homes in Nassau county!!!! I say Nassau because that is where I am concentrating.
There's horrid wallpaper in every room, bathrooms and kitchens need to be completely redone and the houses look like "schlockhouses".
And they're asking $550-599K!!!!!!!!
This makes me want to either stay in my house which looks 10x better or list it for $700k!!!!!!
I just can't get over how DH and I take so much pride in our home and just because we want to move to a bigger house we will either have to fork over $700K or start from scratch again on fixing it up. 
OK rant over.

Areas of suffolk are just as bad. It amazes me what people think their house is worth when it needs hundreds of thousands of dollars in repairs just to make it liveable

It's absolutely shameful and greedy. Take care of your house and then I'll think about paying you what you want for it.
But I'm not gonna list my house which looks like a museum in comparison for the same thing!!!!!

This is one reason why we bought a smaller house with the potential to expand. Which is what we will do when the time is right. Because the prices of houses are insane.

I've been in the housing market for a while now, but I see more and more people trying to jump on the bandwagon with their sh it holes and thinking they can get gold for it......

exactly...just b/c your neighbor got $XXX amount of dollars does not mean your house is worth the same! I remember we saw a house that was FILTHY. I mean a bug crawled across my sandals when we were looking at the master BR. The whole house needed to be gutted just to get the dirt out. It was disgraceful. In addition, they had illegally and poorly constructed "walls" in the house to make it look like there were more BRs than it actually had. Their yard was all dirt & weed - no lawn, and the driveway was completely ruined from not being taken care of. They wanted the same amount as the immaculate 4 BR colonial 3 houses down, which was recently renovated & had a gorgeously manicured front & rear garden. Even my Broker was like, yeah come down $150K & we'll talk

I know We started looking for a bigger house and figured around $500 we could get something nice but forget it.
Most of them were awful inside

if it makes you feel any better - prices have come down a little over the past year. not enough, but it's something....
if my friends in suffolk knew what we had to pay for our house in western nassau i think they would be convinced we are crazy.....

my house they were asking $449K - we paid under $399k....

don't give in to the insanity. there are houses all over MLSI that have dropped 100k in a year. These sellers need to come back to reality, you cannot get top dollar for your piece of crap, filthy house anymore.
We paid 75k less than asking in 2004 when things were flying.
Offer what you're willing to pay regardless of what they are asking.
Don't give up, you'll find something you love at a price you can afford.

we looked and looked and finally found our home (colonial) in Smithtown for under $500,000. It needs minor things (floors, painting) done to it to move in.
Sellers needed to sell. we were in the right place at the right time. Hang in there.

I totally agree! We were in the right place at the right time. We love our house. We needed to take down some ugly wallpaper and paint but we are kind of doing that one room at a time. We have painted 4 rooms so far and have 3 more to go. It is doable for under $5k.

That's my problem, we DID all those things already. Redid every room, spackled, painted, new bathroom, redoing the kitchen ASAP, full landscaping.....
I don't want to do it again! 
I am a licensed RE agent but not practicing, so I see that the market is coming down, so hopefully my negotiating skills will come in handy!

My gf is looking now and her realtor told her that 90% of the houses on LI are dirty-
I guess I am in the minority of wanting a clean home. The stories she tells me makes me want to throw up!!
