nutramigen vs alimentum?

It's my understanding that both nutramigen and alimentum are the same types of formula for those with sensitivies and food allergies. Anyone know if there are any real differences between the two?

Is one more expensive than the other? Which company sends out coupons more frequently?

Re: nutramigen vs alimentum?

I definitely get more enfamil coupons than Similac. As for the difference in the formula, I think that Nutramigen's make-up has less of a milk base than Alimentum, but I am not completely sure about that.

ETA: The amounts of cassein are different, and that is what is derived from cow's milk. Ava is so allergic that even these broken-down milk proteins cause an allergic reaction.

Re: nutramigen vs alimentum?

Thanks....

Rachel - my dd is severly allergic to milk, so when baby #2 is born she will start off right away on one of these formulas. I'm just not sure which to choose yet....our allergist said either was okay.

Is your daughter on Alimentum?

That's what ours said too. Alimentum works better for some, Nutramigen for others. Alimentum didn't work for us, but our insurance covers Neocate so we went right to that. If it wasn't covered we would have tried Nutramigen next.

No, she's so allergic to milk she cannot have either of those two formulas. She is on prescription Neocate. It's an amino acid based formula.

Re: nutramigen vs alimentum?

thanks ladies.

We're going with the assumption that baby #2 will have the same allergies at my first dd (milk and egg) so we're going right to either of these. I am keeping my fingers crossed that our insurance won't fight tooth and nail to cover, even with our allergist writing a letter to them.

I guess I'll try the cheaper formula first and see how she does with it.

How hard was it to get your insurance companies to cover the neocate/other formula?

that they're practically identical and it could be a matter of preference or taste.

Re: nutramigen vs alimentum?

I haven't tried alimentum but nutramigen did wonders for DD. We chose nutramigen because she was initially drinking regular Enfamil.

Did your insurance cover these formulas? Was it a huge battle to get them to do so?

Apparantly by NYS law it has to be covered if a doctor says it's the only thing your kid can take. But I know that Rachel falls into some loophole and has to pay for Neocate out of pocket, the cost is rediculous.

My Andy is on Neocate. We have United Healthcare, and my doctor's office just called them and was told that the doctor just needed to write a prescription. He said it's not usually that easy, he usually has to write a letter, sometimes provide test results and then it's covered. Any that was purchased before the insurance company covered it would be reimbursed.

We got a new United Healtcare plan through a new plan administrator starting Jan. 1 so we're waiting to see if it will still be so easy.

Oh, and we never checked to see if the Alimentum was covered, I was too concerned with continuing to find blood in his stool to deal with it, but it was for someone we know.

My insurance covers the Nutramigen.
If your child has a milk allergy, then they will write a letter to your insurance company.

You have FM
