10 day old baby sleeps all day and cries at night. Advice?
I know, I know... he's a baby.
But, I was wondering if at this point in his young life, you can recommend anything to ween him off being more up at night than the day?
Right now, we have a baby who sleeps soundly in his swing during the day, but who cries/screams when we put him in it at night time. He'll fall asleep in our arms, but I need for him to be IN something safe at that time of night since we're so tired, too.
At what poing do I start putting him on the activity mat for tummy time? And HOW do I do that if he's sleeping all day?
How can I and should I try to keep him up during the day? Will this work towards getting him to sleep at night?
Any other tips/advice? TIA!

Are you trying to make night time "boring" for him?
When I had that problem with DD I wouldn't look at her or talk to her and I would keep all the lights off. Just a small night light enough to see where I was going. When I would sit with her in the glider I would sometimes close my eyes and pretend I was sleeping LOL
As far as tummy time, you can start it now but I waited until the cord stump fell off (2 weeks for me). My sister did it earlier with her DD and her belly button is so weird looking

Tummy time start now. He will only last a little while at first but keep at it. Do it now and he will be so strong sooner.
Play with him during the day. Keep it light and bright. Put in the sun. I woke dd every 3 hrs during the day at first then let he sleep as ling as she could at night. When he is awake at night don't play or talk to him. Keep it dark.

when my kids came home from the NICU at 9 days old the doctor said do not let them sleep all day. from very early on he recommends differentiating between night and day. he said to nudge them every so often during the day....meaning if they are napping it is ok, but not to let them be in a deep sleep for 2-4hours straight. keep lights on, tv on etc. during the day. at night keep it dark, minimal stimulation etc.

classic day/night reversal. from day one when we brought our DD home, we would have TV, lights, noise on in the day. At night, it is dim, quiet voices, night time.
a routine also helps. at bedtime, change into pjs, wipe down with warm towel, sing, nurse or bottle in the dark and then right to bed. when they wake up at night, dont turn on the lights, dont talk to them. just feed them and put them back to sleep. its never too early to start a routine that they can associate sleep with.
in the daytime, try to keep them up for a little bit after they eat.... even if they can only last for a diaper change. at nighttime, put them to bed right after they eat. this will distniguish for them the difference between night and day feedings as well.

Thank you for the great advice.
We're struggling with the fact that he always poops while eating, so we HAVE to change him after he eats. But then the diaper change stimulates him.
The other issue is that it's not only that he's awake, but CRYING/SCREAMING - especially when we put him down.
He's doing "tummy time" right now... the activity mat describes it as "tummy time FUN". With DS, it basically means he's SLEEPING on his tummy. lol. This kid sleeps through anything in the day!!

My baby used to sleep ALL day and even during feeding and wakes up around 1am and starts wailing!! Then with someone's recommendation, I started taking waking her up at her morning feed, open the shades in her room, taking her out for a walk in the morning, etc. I even stripped her during her feeding during the day. She eventually starting sleeping at night too and it turned into sleeping during the day AND night. It got better around the 6 weeks mark for us.
