1 year+ and still rear-facing?

Marron is 17 months old and I still have her in the car rear-facing. She is only 22 pounds and she really doesn't mind sitting that way. Is there a problem with keeping her this way for a longer period of time?

As long as the car seat you have holds her weight (most of them are good for at lest 30lbs) then you are safe - they say it is safer than forward facing.

Definately not. My ped said to keep them rear facing as long as possible. I turned Sarah around when Andy was born so that I would be able to see better if she was poking at him.

We had to turn Andy around soon after he turned one b/c he used to choke on his saliva pretty frequently and he learned that if he made the noise I'd respond so I wanted to be able to see him to see if he was playing or if it was really a problem.

We just changed Ali about 2 weeks ago.
She is only 21lbs (and we have a seat that goes up to 30), but the reason we changed her, was because she was getting too tall for the seat - she is 32" tall.

At my lamaze class they said the new regulations say the child should face rear-facing until 20 months. It was proven less cervical injuries facing that way then facing forward.

20 months? Then they are going to have to do some major redesigns on all car seats. DD is on the smaller side (~25th percentile for length) and we had to switch her around at 15 months because her knees were up near her chest. I can't imagine having her wedged in there for several more months in the current car seat designs....

DD's legs were bent. Even babies have limits as to how far they can bend, though... Chat Icon Plus, DD is only 25th percentile. I can't imagine a 75th or bigger baby....

No problem at all, as others have said, it is actually safest.

I didn't turn my daughter around until she was 21 months -- and she is in the 75th for height.

DD is 2 and is still rear facing. It's safer. Just check the weight limits on your car seat for rear facing.
DD just sits Indian Style. She doesn't seem to mind at all.

Re: 1 year+ and still rear-facing?

Thanks everybody. Another mom acted like I was doing Marron a disservice by not letting her look forward. I have the Roundabout and I think she can stay that way until 30lbs so I'm going to keep her that way. Chat Icon
