Chew some gum to keep your mouth busy, and try your darndest not to think about it. The second it pops in your head, change the subject. I promise you, it will get easier. I too stopped cold turkey and I know how tough it can be. You can do it!!!

Re: For those of you that quit smoking . . .

Honestly, I had been slowly weaning myself off for a couple of years.
It is very hard though, especially when I am drinking (I have a strong assoc with drinking and smoking).

You might say I got fairly "lucky". About a month or so ago I got a sinus infection and had a bad attack of my allergies as well as reflux.Chat Icon I was so completely utterly miserable that I was afraid to pick up a cig knowing I would feel ten times worse. The cravings do get easier, though. I promise. Just think of all the good you are doing for your body, especially lungs and heart. You will feel better. Does it help to chew gum/suck on candy? I also found that at times in the past when I "cheated", I felt all the more guilty for doing so. It almost wasn't worth it to cheat cause I couldn't really enjoy the cigarette and I felt so horrible after.

I know how hard it is, if you need any support FM!!!

In the meantime, be so proud for taking this important step!!! It is such a wonderful thing you are doing for yourself.Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I kept a package of hard candies with me at all times. As soon as I craved a cigarette, I popped a candy in my mouth.

Re: For those of you that quit smoking . . .

I quit the day I found out I was pregnant so it made quitting easier.....I would NOT smoke while pregnant...it has actually been pretty easy. When I tried to quit before, I got Wellbutrin from my doctor which helped ALOT with the cravings. It will get easier after the first week, hang in there

I just pushed through. It was the most difficult and best thing I ever did for myself. Try to keep your hands busy and stay out of situations where you would normally smoke really helps.

good luck and stay strong Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: For those of you that quit smoking . . .

Go in your car or something and scream real loud " I want a cigarette "

Its like by admitting it, it helps instead of denying it.

Hang in there! Chat Icon

Re: For those of you that quit smoking . . .

I had been sick for three months straight. After my doc told me I had walking pneumonia, I decided to do it. I didn't smoke when I was sick anyway, so it wasn't as bad by that point.

I still think the best time to quit is when you're sick. You feel like crap anyway and you tend to sleep more. Chat Icon

Good luck!!

Re: For those of you that quit smoking . . .

Let me tell you, it 100% gets better. DONT give up.

i thought I was gonna kill someone or go INSANE, Honestly the first week I was thinking about smoking, no doubt at least every few minutes ALL day long.

The second week was ok. Third week was hard again.

Its been over 2 months for me and its like NOTHING at all compared to what it was. I think about it, wish I could, know I cant and the cravings are not even really there anymore. NO constant need.

It does I SWEAR get easier if you can just make it through. I really didnt believe the people who said it either. I thought, yeah right, Im never gonna be able to do this.

But you will get there.

Re: For those of you that quit smoking . . .

i took the wellbutrin to stop smoking- 1 month -and it worked GREAT.
I had tried a few times in the past to stop via cold turkey & the patch without success.

I quit cold turkey 3 years ago . . . lollipops were my best friend. By yourself a bag of tootsie pops. Also, working out helps b/c it focuses your mind on something else.

Good luck and keep it up!Chat Icon

Re: For those of you that quit smoking . . .

Once the 1st week is over, it gets easier. I quit cold turkey last summer for about 10 months, then started again for about 5 months then just quit a month ago today. I feel like I could smoke for a weekend and then quit again easily. The thing that bothers me is the fact that as an ex-smoker, I will never fully get over the psychological pressure to want to smoke. Chat Icon

Re: For those of you that quit smoking . . .

I agree (quit 3 times already, once I was preggo though) I did it cold turkey as well. After the 1st week you dont even think about it anymore. Plus my SO didn't smoke so it made things alot easier.

Everytime I thought about lighting up I would picture my sons face or think of his laugh and think what it would be like not to be around to hear it or see him. I got that urge right outa my head.

Now the only time I get any inkling is if I am drunk (which is not very often). Otherwise I can't stand the smell or even be near it or it makes me naseous!
