I'd call the camp and ask what their policy is on cell phones. If they say their counselors are only allowed to use them for emergencies, etc, I'd make them aware of the situation.
I don't think you are overreacting. If they are texting, then they are not paying attention to the kids.

I am bad with wording things like this, but maybe you can write the email asking if they have a policy on cell phone use by the counselors? This way you will find out what the policy is and maybe they will talk to their counselors to remind them of it. Not saying that you know they are using them but they will probably take the hint.

Or ask about the policy and if you want to go further, you can say that it has been brought to your attention or you have witnessed excessive use of cell phones during working hours and want to make sure that it isn't affecting the supervision of the children and counselors should be reminded to restrict cell phone use to break times or for emergency situations.

In reference to the initial post- you are not out of line at all, far from it.

Maybe say something along the lines of:

I am writing to inquire about the camp policy on cell phone by counselors. I bring my children to camp knowing that they are in good hands, but I have serious concerns. My children have brought to my attention the time their counselors spend talking and texting and I am hoping you can clarify the policy for me, or consider implementing one if none exists.

As a parent I know that it only takes seconds for children to become lost or injured and such things can happen even when a parent or counselor is at his/her most vigilant. However, counselors who are texting or talking on the phone are not giving the children in their care the proper attention. Please give this matter the attention that it needs.

Definately make the call!! It is children's safety we are talking about here. Nothing wrong in questioning it, especially when you are paying $$ to have people watch children, not their phonesChat Icon

I really don't think you're out of line for inquiring about the camp's cell phone policy.

In light of the scary and traumatizing incident that happened with Maddie last summer, I think you of all the parents has the best reason to be concerned about the inattentiveness of the camp counselors. You have first-hand knowledge of what can happen when the counselors look away for even just a moment.

I can't imagine that the Director from last year has forgotten that incident. I know I haven't.

I'm not a great writer though. If fact, I'd probably defer to something you drafted, just because you're usually so darn good at it!
