My boss throws a very nice party each year- everything included, no money to be paid out- he is very generous. Some years he had it at a nice restaurant and would rent the place out for the night- but lately, the last few years, he has opened up his beautiful house to all of our employees... He has it catered, drinks, etc- the nines!
We are like a family though- small office, everyone gets along- everyone has fun and laughs so his parties go ALL night (3-4am) and people really like my boss, me included, great personality- so everyone is eager to go.
But, in your position- I would not go- that is a lot of money to spend, (which BTW I don't think you should have to pay for an office Holiday party) and it's a lot to spend if you don't really like anyone that much... Not worth it!

My bosses through us an all inclusive one, spouses included each year! We all have a good time together!
