Thanks for the help everyone, I spoke to my BF this weekend and he is ok with it being a joint party, so now it will be, it is just easier

I'm just curious though, did you ask the sister if she wants the party? I am only thinking maybe since she is engaged and knows that all of these people will have to go to the shower and wedding she doesn't also want a 40th where people feel obligated to give a gift? Just a thought...

Yes, she and I have been talking about this for over a year
Secondly, they're not having a big wedding. It's 30 people and other than immediate family, no overlap and no date scheduled for that. But one thing really doesn't have to do with the other. No shower, they have owned a house and have a child together

I wasn't actually assuming anything. I was asking a question....
However if you have been talking to her about it for over a year and you knew she wanted a party then obviously make it a joint party. Not even sure why there would be a hesitation. I think your original question shouldn't have been how to handle the invitation but rather how to handle her idiot fiance who doesn't even know her well enough to know she wants to have a party...
