Nipsey Hussle

How come he has had such an impact and being compared to Malcolm X, but alot of people I asked including myself don't know who he was?

I think his death is tragic but his huge notoriety has me confused.

I hadn't heard of him either. He was apparently very big in the hip hop world. I haven't seen anything comparing him to Malcom X. Either way this is a man who died with a family and young children. Why question his notoriety?

I don’t think she’s implying his death isn’t tragic. Just that the media is portraying him like his was a household name when most haven’t heard of him.

Because recently in interviews he has been compared to Malcom x and Martin Luther King and I was confused as to where this was coming from. So I am questioning it. I don’t see why that’s a big deal.

I said his death was tragic I don’t why him having kids and family meant I couldn’t ask a question. I guess that was a suttle point for you to insinuate I’m heartless or something.

I'm with you on this. I'd like to think I'm pretty well versed on what's going on in the hip hop world at times, but I never heard of him either until now. But to make those comparisons to either man is a bit much.

Yes I thought that was a stretch. I’ve been kind of following his story and yesterday they made the comparison on Hot 97 or 105.1. I guess because of the conspiracy theory that he was killed by the government because of the documentatary he was working on.

I had never heard of him, either and I like to think of myself as still on the cusp of cool. Apparently I’m not.

Regardless, it is tragic and horrible.

He was apparently hugely influential in LA. I also don't think he was a mainstream rapper that NYers would know of.

I'd say, most of who? Because black people seem to know him quite well.

All the people I know who are majority black. Maybe you hit the nail on the head and it is a coast thing and he probably would have really exploded worldwide if he wasnt taken so soon. My husband knew of him.

I was actually having this conversation with my coworkers...some of whom are black. And I think only one person knew who he was.

Re: Nipsey Hussle

he was pretty big out here (los angeles area).

he was doing a lot of work to make the area where he grew up safer and healthier.

a lot of my coworkers were devastated when they heard the news.

i hadn't heard of him... but i know i am very un-hip and un-cool, so that's not saying much.

they arrested a suspect one city over from where i grew up.

This was what I encounter when I found out he died.

It seems like I should've provided further evidence like im puerto rican and the majority of people I know are black (including latinos in this consensus), and I listen to hip hop on the regular. I find it crazy how i'm being questioned on who was my audience, accusing me of not thinking his death was tragic.

"Like yes, I asked 100 white people who listen to rock / country and was shocked that no one heard of Nipsey Hussle."Chat Icon Chat Icon

btw in my OP I said his death was tragic, but the interview & social media comparisons are a little out of reach.

Eta: & no I don't believe white ppl only listen rock or country.

I am white & from NY and knew who he was before his death...but I also listen to The Breakfast Club every morning on my way to work so am "up" on things in the hip-hop world. Very, very sad.
