Hives after a virus

Is this common on adults? My kids have gotten hives after a virus when they were younger but I never have. Since thanksgiving week we have all been very sick. Fevers, stomach bugs, sore throats. The last of it was the stomach bug. My kids all had it and I had it Sunday and Monday. I still have a cough that will probably not go away for another week or two. My coughs always linger. But last night I started to get really itchy. It was bad. From my shoulders down to my feet. I felt these little bumps. I freaked out thinking our dogs all of a sudden had fleas. I went into the bathroom at 3am and looked at my back and stomach and I had some small bumps and Somme larger ones that were more hive like. I looked on my legs and the same thing. I took some children's Benadryl and after about a half hour the itching completely stopped and by the time I woke up this morning the bumps had gone away completely. The last time this happened to me was when I inhaled my children's nebulizer when they they were babies. Found out I was allergic to albuterol. Anyway, I haven't been anywhere near albuterol. Is this common after a virus for an adult? How long can this last? Is there anything other than Benadryl that I can take? Something that won't make me drowsy? I'm still feeling the effects from the children's Benadryl I took at 3am and DH and I are supposed to be going out tonight. I don't want to be an itchy mess but I also don't want to fall on my face from the Benadryl. TIA!

I would stick to the benedryl for now. Even tho they say any antihistamine should help. Claritin, Zyrtec , etc. maybe start taking Zyrtec daily and see if it keeps them away?

I've never heard of hives after a sickness before. And I thought I've had just about everything ! I also was sick thanksgiving week. A cold that turned into gastritis/esophagitis/extreme GERD. just now beginning to feel better with taking meds for GERD for 10 days. Everyone is so so sick.

Anyway.. if the hives continue, I'd go to the dr. They may give you prednisone for it. Or may tell you to start taking a daily antihistamine and see what happens.

I hope you feel better soon.

Thanks ladies! I know you can get hives after a virus, my twins used to get viral hives after every viral infection. This is a first for me though. I only took a half a dose of the children's Benadryl and I am just starting to feel better from it. I'm going to try to get to the pharmacy and ask the pharmacist about taking something else.
