LI elem positions

Hi all,

I'm currently an elementary teacher out of state. I'm from Long Island and did subbing and leaves for 5 years, and decided to move for a job. I've been teaching for 5 years, and am considering a move back to LI next year. Is it still impossible to get a job? I'm elem/sped certified. Working on my ESL now. Don't want to lose the job that I have now if I'm going to end up subbing again. Thanks!

Still not easy to get a job. I'm very fortunate that I got a job right out of college 10 years ago but that is not the norm. You say you are going for ESL certification but are you bilingual? That would you give a huge advantage.

Definitely easier than 5 years ago but still tough. With an ESL cert you should be fine. Don't move until you have a firm job. With 5 years at your current employer hopefully you have enough personal days to interview on LI.

All I can say is good luck. I left teaching to be a SAHM and have been trying to break back in for 2 years now. I have subbed, had leave replacements, and been offered teaching assistant positions that pay peanuts. I am now actively searching the DOE and Catholic schools because unless you know an administrator, I have found its next to impossible to get an elementary teaching job in a Long Island public school.
