I KNOW its not yet July 1... but I have sent out over 125 resumes to 125 different principals in the DOE over the past 2 weeks and nothing. I did have that one demo lesson that I thought went fabulous. The principal asked for my employee ID number, references, etc, and said he could not do any hiring until July 1... then emailed me to ask if he could send my resume to another principal he knows Chat Icon

I NEED to secure something for September. I can't sub or take a leave. I have been subbing and doing leaves for 2 years now.

It is so hard to stay positive at this point.

I understand. I subbed/had four leaves for six years, wound up leaving teaching (not happy), and this is the first time I've applied to Queens. I haven't heard anything and I have professional childhood and early childhood (and I'm going for library right now). Hang in there!

Re: Discouraged

I recently left teaching as well because I could not afford to get paid per-diem sub pay anymore. I HATE IT... I am like a fish out of water. I LOVE teaching and do not feel comfortable at all in an office. I have had 3 leaves, and been a permanent sub. I am so done and ready for my own classroom. I am going back for my ENL certification, but that will not be complete until January. Does me no good for this September.

Best of luck to you as well!

I'm sorry... It's hard to stay positiveChat Icon I heard someone else in my school talking about open market and how they didn't receive any phone calls either. Our union rep said that on July 1st the budget comes out and that's when they'll start calling people. Best of luck to you!!Chat Icon

I've been there. 2 years ago it was the end of August and I was so discouraged. Then I finally got hired for a new position in October. Hang in there!

Re: Discouraged

Two pre-k spots just opened up in my school in the Bronx. Not sure if you can do that with your license.

Nope... my prek-6 expired and when I went to get my certifications back, it was no longer an option. So I have 1-6... but thank you! Let me know if anything else opens up!

I know its early to be stressed, especially for the DOE. I know that on Long Island, most of the hiring is done already. I just HATE not knowing where I will be, if I will even have a teaching job. I do know that I NEED to get out of this office setting. The people are lovely... the job is not bad... but I don't belong here. I belong in a classroom.

Re: Discouraged

There is still plenty of summer hiring on LI.

- Unanticipated increased enrollment requires new sections.
- CSE determines students need additional services.
- Teacher switches districts in summer for better commute, more money, etc.
- Teacher obtains admin position.
- Teacher decides not to return from leave.
and the list goes on...

Discouraged

I know it's stressful. You were me 2 years ago. I was offered the job around this time but it took 2 weeks for HR to send me the offer. The waiting game was awful. And even then everything for me didn't go through until mid-August (but I had special complicated circumstances).

Just keep sending out your resume, email every school within your commutable distance first. Then branch out a little further and send your resume to those places.

I will tell you I sent about 150 schools my resume in Queens, Brooklyn and Manhattan. Then I sent 3 (yup just 3) to the Bronx and well that's where I work. I only scored an interview at one Manhattan school and one Brooklyn school after I had accepted the Bronx school offer. Many Queens schools reached out to me to ask if I had ESL or if I was bilingual because that's the only positions they had.

Re: Discouraged

Thanks! I've had two DOE offers - one in mid-July and one in late July. I've had two probationary LI offers - one in November (yes, mid-year positions do occur even on LI!) and the other one where I currently am after being excessed from the district that hired mid-year was extended early August.

Re: Discouraged

Still nothing.

The school where I did the demo lesson, and the principal said how he wasn't sure exactly where the vacancies were, and said that he would "be in touch"... Nothing. I did email him to thank him for the opportunity and he wrote back that he is still "solidifying the vacancies" and is "keeping me in mind" Chat Icon

I know it's technically still "early" and that I can get something up until the first day of school... but sitting here waiting and waiting and waiting is a killer. I send out resumes each and every single day and have FLOODED the DOE. I am sure by now every single principal in Queens has received my resume 2 or 3 times.

I have an interview today in the Bronx... wish me luck!

How is your commute to the Bronx?
