What age for first gynolocologist visit?
My daughter is 16 and has not been yet. She is not sexually active, not even on the horizon. She has had her period since 11, and they are sometimes really heavy.
Should she go, or can I hold off? I'm afraid of traumatizing her, lol.

What age for first gynolocologist visit?
Paps dont start until age 21, she can go and meet with a GYN just as a meet and greet.
How do you know she is not sexually active or its not in the near future? I work with girls starting at age 11 and up
One reason young girls can and should meet alone with a GYN or their Pediatrician is so they can Privately discuss concerns that Mom might not like to hear or to ask questions even about their period that perhaps she might not ask you.
a meet and greet will not traumatize her ;)

She has not yet had a boyfriend or even her first kiss yet. We are very close and we openly discuss things. She's very much focused on school and colleges at the moment, and is 6th in her class of 450.
I didn't know Paps start at 21. Has that changed? I remember going and getting a pap at 18. In fact, at 20 they found precancerous cells and I had to have cryosurgery. I guess times have changed.

Paps are often abnormal at a young age even at 21. Cells in young people are shedding and changing so fast that when looked at under a microscope then are in the process of changing and can look abnormal.
Even if she is so focused a private meet and greet is always a good idea, because it helps her learn to build a doctor/pt relationship. I was very focused at her age :)
A great book to give her is Our Bodies our Selves.

The first time I went to the obgyn I was 20 years old and I got a pap done. Like you, I had a good relationship with my mom and we discussed pretty much everything. She scheduled me the appointment since I wanted to go on BCPs.

A gyno isn't just for birth control. They check for thyroid. Cysts hormones that can affect your entire well being. If I had a girl I would go at 15 at least for baseline bloodwork if not pelvic exam xoxo

I would take her now. Especially if her periods are really heavy. Let the gyno do bloodwork just to make sure all is ok. My periods did not get super heavy until after I had my kids.
My mom took both my sister and I when we turned 16. I remember the gyno talked to me and did a pelvic exam. My sister had really painful periods sometimes (like she couldn't get out of bed) and they checked some stuff on her and they found pre-cancerous cells when she was 16. So it was good she knew so they could keep a close eye on it.
We survived  although my mom didn't care if we were traumatized. We had no choice. She made the appointment and told us and that was it.

I would take her now. I went at 17, and they did a pap smear. Along with breast exam, pelvic exam, thyroid etc .. and everything else a Gyno checks for.

I was 15; ouch. I took my DD also when she was 15 but they didn't do a pap(thank goodness). It was for heavy periods as well.

I was 14, but I needed to bc I had pain so terrible I used to collapse. I don't think I had a pap at that age.
Also, they do have pediatric gynocologists. I know I saw one in bellmore

I was 16 for very heavy periods and was put on bc which was a god send at the time because it helped my periods so much. I was not having sex yet so my mom was a bit iffy of the bc but it helped so much.

I waited until forever! I don't even remember my mother encouraging me to go. I went when i was like 20 and living with a guy who couldn't believe i'd never went! I actually only went because i needed bc pills.

I think I was 19 my first visit. But I WISH my mom brought me earlier. I had the heaviest periods and worst cramps growing up. I remember I couldn't go to school two days a month bc of them. BCPs were the only thing that ended up helping.

Also, to me it's no different than going for a dental or an eye exam. It's a part of your body, it should be examined every year... If you decide to bring her just stress that maybe it will make it less tramatic. Also I think some doctors will skip the pelvic exam and pap if you aren't sexually active but I'm not 100%. I know I have heard of this but not sure if it's common practice or not.
