Re: Bilingual Parents

My family is from Haiti. When I was little my grandparents mostly spoke Creole (broken french) in the house. They spoke English very well, but felt it was important that their children and grandchildren spoke the language. When we were little my parents speak both english and creole to my brothers and I. We usually responded in english though. I've never had any issues with english....Most people never know I speak another language. My son is only 2 months old, but I plan to teach him Creole.

Understand the need for parents to instill their culture in children. But I usually see that it's the children who speak english and become translators for their parent. I don't think that fair to the children. We had a neighbor, whose parents would keep him from school sometimes if the parents needed him to translate when they went out.
