Re: if you knew someone was a registered sex offender....

I would avoid it regardless of "why" they were labeled. I mean how would I REALLY know if it was for public urination unless I was very close with said person?

Re: if you knew someone was a registered sex offender....

Registered sex offenders send up a red flag.

I trust no one. Always on guard.
It is going to be the person right under your nose...the most reported molester is the white male, educated, married, working and religious.

know any?Chat Icon exactly. the victims are sick. this is the love and family model they know and grew up with.

it is reported that 2 girls out of 10 are reported victims. 1 boy out of 10.

reported.

that is a ton of sickness out there.
I don't know if i have some sort of social disorder to a face that makes people want to spill...but i know of so many who have confessed things to me. people i would have never pegged. girls and uncles or grandfathers....who NEVER told their parents.

So, registered...ehhh...takes the guesswork out of the situation for me.
I have one job...give them a happy healthy childhood. I stop at nothing to make sure that happens.

Re: if you knew someone was a registered sex offender....

Just so you all know, someone who has a sex offense for something like public lewdness (what you are all calling public urination) would be labeled a level 1 sex offender, if they were required to register at all, and no one except the police are notified of a level 1 registration. The community is only notified of the person's name if its a level 2 or 3 registered offender. And unless this person comes out and tells you, you'll never know that they are registered.

For any of the reasons listed above. No Way! If it was a 19 yr old guy who had sex with his 16 yr old girlfriend. I don't think I would have a problem with it.

Edited to fix "19" yr old guy.

I agree with this. But, it would also depend on how long that 19 year old was dating the 16 year old. Actually no, in this case, a 19 year old shouldn't be dating a 16 year old. Maybe if they were dating for a couple of years...but then she would be 14 and him 17, and that's still wrong IMO. Maybe a 17 year old and 15 year old. Not sure.

But, a 17 and 14 year old could be a senior or junior dating a freshman. It happens all the time.

That's true, it happens all the time... and they don't all become registered sex offenders. If they do, I would say something must have gone horribly wrong and there has got to be more to the story.. just my opinion. Chat Icon

Anyway, unless I was absolutely desperate because I needed to run to the emergency room .. or some other similar emergency.. I would NOT leave my kid with a registered sex offender.

Come on Jen I'm sure you know other people!! ...

Again, just my opinion.

Re: if you knew someone was a registered sex offender....

I would have to know the reason for conviction. There are registered sex offenders who were convicted based on statatory rape or public urination. To me, those arent reasons to never leave my child alone with them. They aren't any more a danger to my child than anyone else is.

I think this is a simple case of judging people before you know the whole story.

While you may be livid with your sons (as my parents were when they found out) would you still feel that your son deserved to be sign up to be a registered sex offender? If it was a relationship and nothing your son was doing was forceful? As mad as you may be at him I don't think he would deserve to be catogorized that way.

technically a 20 year old would be a sex offender. The parents of the 15 year old could press charges!

I don't care. 15 and 20 is too much of an age difference. MOST 15 year olds are NOT mature enough to make decisions about sex, period. I'd completely agree with a 20 year old being charged with and registered as a sex offender.

Of course your experience is your experience, and I'm glad it's all worked out, but I do believe it's the exception and not the rule.

It doesnt have to be a 5 year age difference. The age of consent is 17. So if a 17 year old has sex with a 16 year old, the 17 year old can be charged (even if the 16 year old technically consented, the parents can choose to press charges).

This is why I stand firm on my statement in my last post. People can be a convicted sex offender for very minor infractions - things that are not really any harm to society. I think without knowing the true circumstances of WHY the person was convicted it would be foolish and naive to automatically label them unsafe to be around children.

I think this would be the only reason I would be ok with. DH was 20 and I was 15 when we started dating so for 3 years he could have gotten in trouble for being with me. And he is a great person. That's why I say this. Anything else, no way.

Agreed...I also have an acquaintance that had to register for being arrested for public urination at age 21. Considered indecent exposure in some states. He is not a sex offender IMO...just a drunk man peeing in an alley at 2am.

yes the public urinaton thing and statutory rape (consensual) are the things that came to my mind as being the only exceptions I would make.

Absolutely no way! I don't care what the infraction was, they were put on a registry for a reason.

Re: if you knew someone was a registered sex offender....

I think of course it would depend on the offense. a 15 y,o who sexts with his gf is not the same as a rapist. It would also depend on my relationship with the person. if this was someone I knew and loved and it was a minor offense or there was some circumstance, that could change things. if it's just a random person I don't know, then I'd just keep my kids away in an abundance of caution.

Re: if you knew someone was a registered sex offender....

If you're talking about a hired sitter then HECK NO!

I was thinking it was someone you knew, a friend or relative.

I had a friend who was kicked out of school for an alleged rape. It never went to the police, though he wanted it to since she girl had no evidence. I absolutely don't believe he raped the girl. He was cheating on his college gf and she wanted to get back it him. She was also cheating on him with another guy, so I think it was either that or she was trying to cover up having slept with him. It was a crappy situation, but he didn't rape her. If he had somehow been labeled from that, it wouldn't change how I feel about him and how safe he is around kids.
