Preparing for Independence Day - ideas needs & if you can tell me what this thing is called!

For the Fourth of July (which is going to be a beach kind of thing), so far I've bought

Sky Lanterns
Towels with Twister, Checkers & Tic-Tac-Toe
Water guns
Start & stripes sun glasses

I'm looking for those things you throw on the ground & they make a snap sound...what are they called?

Also where oh were can I get sparklers? They're illegal in NY?! ERRRR>>>

Off to buy some rocket balloons....

any other ideas?

Yes, sparklers are illegal... from NY Penal Law:

1. Definition of "fireworks" and "dangerous fireworks". The term
"fireworks," as used in this section, is defined and declared to be and
to include any blank cartridge, blank cartridge pistol, or toy cannon in
which explosives are used, firecrackers, sparklers or other combustible
or explosive of like construction, or any preparation containing any
explosive or inflammable compound or any tablets or other device
commonly used and sold as fireworks containing nitrates, chlorates,
oxalates, sulphides of lead, barium, antimony, arsenic, mercury,
nitroglycerine, phosphorus or any compound containing any of the same or
other explosives, or any substance or combination of substances, or
article prepared for the purpose of producing a visible or an audible
effect by combustion, explosion, deflagration or detonation, or other
device containing any explosive substance and the term "dangerous
fireworks" means any fireworks capable of causing serious physical
injury and which are: firecrackers containing more than fifty milligrams
of any explosive substance, torpedoes, skyrockets and rockets including
all devices which employ any combustible or explosive substance and
which rise in the air during discharge, Roman candles, bombs, sparklers
more than ten inches in length or one-fourth of one inch in diameter, or
chasers including all devices which dart or travel about the surface of
the ground during discharge.

ETA: Not to get all debate-ish, I just figured I'd post it in case anyone was confused with what was/was not allowed. Chat Icon

You can get snappers at a lot of little independent deli/card store places. . But if you really want to buy sparklers without having to look.. PA is the place to go.

Here in OH you can get sparklers in every store from Walgreens to the grocery store. Everytime I see them I am taken aback, like...why the heck can you buy fireworks in the grocery store???? Guess its that NY upbrining.

My friend just had them at her sons 5th birthday party and I was like "really...you're giving your kid a sparkler!" No joke when they say the midwest is a different world! Chat Icon

Sparklers are illegal? I had no clue....Last year my friends from CT brought some to my house....had no idea.

Bang snaps - I remember them from a kid.

How about glow necklaces/bracelets? We went to a beach party on Memorial Day weekend and all the kids had them for when it got dark.
