You know.. I remember taking music at the high school over the summer when I was in elementary school.
I was actually surprised that our district doesn't have summer music!
What did surprise me is that if Robbie chooses to take a stringed instrument (he wants to do Standing Bass) - he will need to start in the fall and will be committed until the end of 5th grade. He will not be permitted to switch to a band instrument when the rest of the kids get to choose one in 4th grade.
I'm absolutely POSITIVE that you will be allowed to have Joseph evaluated separately - if he's been able to progress as much as the district does, it should be no problem!
What instrument does he want to take?

Wow, that seems crazy. And almost 4.5 hours seems like a really long time for lessons to me. I hope it works out. If I was closer to your district I'd offer to pick him up for you.

Our district is similar . the kids going into 4th grade that take the summer music program the summer before 4th grade have a better chance of getting the intrument they want . I had asked why that was and they explained that if they cant have a band and no ochestra and they cant have just standing bass , saxaphone, flute and drumb players. In our district they own a certain number of each instrument. so when the sign up when out in sept each kid has to put the top 3 choices but it also would say for ex: sax no longer available etc.
