Dear Friends and Family,

“It's amazing how life's journey takes you to places you never thought you'd be...placing challenges before you and finding the strength from within – to get you past.”

For those who know me, you know that I'm a motivated and a dedicated person in all that I do. When I was thirteen years old, I joined the Track and Field team and two years later, the Cross Country team, despite being on at least three to four different medications for my asthma. With the help of my coaches, friends, family and my own inner strength, I was able to push myself every step of the way through workouts, races and several injuries. While I out-grew much of my asthma, I continue to run in races far beyond what I have done in high school and for reasons that are beyond my own aspirations. In 2005, with your help, I was able to raise over $1,000 for the MS Society and ran my first ½ marathon dedicated to my cousin Janice, who continues to suffer with MS. After completing my second ½ marathon this past May, I have decided to take it a little further by challenging myself to complete the full 26.2 miles at The Walt Disney World Marathon on January 12, 2008 with Team In Training, an amazing organization that trains people just like you and me to compete in endurance events, while raising valuable funds for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

As a member of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Team in Training program, I have pledged to run on behalf of Francesca Mollo to help raise money for leukemia research and patient assistance programs. Francesca is a sweet and adorable little girl, who enjoys singing, swimming, dancing, and gymnastics. She was three years old when she was diagnosed with ALL, and underwent chemotherapy and other treatments for her diseases. Happily, Francesca, now 8 years old, has been cancer free since July 2005. Her strength and determination throughout her diagnosis, treatments and recovery have inspired me to take on the challenge of fundraising and training.

Leukemia is the #1 disease killer of children, and the leading fatal malignant disease of men and women under the age of 35. Although the cause of leukemia remains unknown, recently developed treatments and steady advances in research bring us closer to a cure every day.

These research advances were only achieved as a result of contributions made by companies, foundations and individuals. My goal is to raise $3,800 by November 28, 2007. I am asking that you find it in your hearts to join me in this effort, and visit my website at http://www.active.com/donate/tntliny/tntlinyBWhelan. By donating as little as $5, $25, $500, or whatever amount that you can comfortably give will be greatly appreciated. All funds raised support the Society’s vital programs of blood research, patient aid, community service and education. In doing so, you will be supporting The Leukemia and Lymphoma’s mission: to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma and to improve the quality of life of patients and their families. With the generosity of people like you, there is every reason to believe that a cure is in sight.

I would also like to invite you to pass this letter along to at least 7 or more of your friends, family members or co-workers.

Thank you for your consideration,
Barbara Whelan

hey fellow tnt'er- see my post on the charity board. I'm running the chicago marathon in october. Congrats for signing up! I am with the NYC team but I'm moving to LI. Good to know they have a LI team! Have you started your training? Your prob a little more advanced than me- i was a very beginner, but now have run 16 miles on my past long run!

i have asthma also, it has def improved since i've started training. i usually only need a few puffs before working out and i'm good the whole time.

good luck with your training and fundraising! the coaches are wonderful.
