QOTD...Christmas Gifts for your DC

OK, so family members (like 6 of them) started asking this weekend "what does Gracie want for Christmas?" I told them I would get back to them. Both my family and Dh's family like to be told what to get because they want to get something practical that we can "use" (like clothes, certain toys, diapers) rather than something Grace would not need (a surplus of toys). My DH said we should send out an email (the practical programmer that he is) outlining what she needs and let them pick from a list if things. He gets upset that they can't just pick out something with out us telling them.

So the QOTD is, would you send out an email outlining a list of potential gifts? Would you just say get her whatever you think is best? If I say the latter, I KNOW they will call me and keep asking what do we "need".

I know there a larger problems in the world besides this issue and that we are lucky to have a generous and supportive family. I was just wondering what other moms would do in this situation.

I wouldn't send an email.... I hate when people ask this question bc it's uncomfortable. I always say whatever you want to give is fine. If they are persistant then I'll say a GC to Target or BRU.

Yes I would do it. My stepmom asks every year for this and finds it very helpful if we give her something in writing. She loves website links too (makes it easier for her) for clothing, toys etc.

Toys R us does a wish list if you want to send to multiple people. I think Babies R Us is included there too.

This is my whole point...it is uncomfortable. I have no idea what their budget is, what they think is appropriate, if they just want to be told to make shopping easier, if they really just want to get her something that they know we need, or if it is a combination of all of these things.

If I don't send the email and they press me, what should I say???

This is what DH wants to do because he thinks it would be easier on our relatives, but I am uneasy about emailing a wish list from my 5 month old, ya know?

I would not send an e-mail. I would speak individualy to each person. My parents always ask what to get Molly as do a few other people. They do it more so that "Santa" does not bring the same gifts.

Re: QOTD...Christmas Gifts for your DC

do the family members youre sending the email to talk to eachother?
what if they all get the same thing from the list?
If it were me i would just tell them the best gift would be a GC.
so annoying to have to go return doubles.
I have the same situation and I also feel wierd telling them what to get my kids. But for the ones that I KNOW are gonna get them something,i jsut tell them a GC-easy for everybody!

Most do, some don't. I guess I will talk to everyone individually. BTW, mostof our family members HATE to give gift cards. Chat Icon

I flat out say, I can't tell you what to give and/or how much to give. I tell them anything they give no matter what will be appreciated. I tell them anything from FP or that's educational if they want to give him toys, but clothes are also good and then I tell him what size he wears.

i would send an email to my parents - they ask mike and i what we want and so i usually do it to make it easier - that way, they don't have to write it as I tell them....and will be doing the same for samantha with them....my sister already told me that she will go shopping with me around xmas and i can point out things I want and then she'll choose...as for everyone else, if they ask i will offer suggestions, but otherwise, i'll let them decide!!

If you send out a list, 10 people can get the same thing still. I also think its a little rude to send out a wish list.

I would tell everyone individually and tell them a few things that you need, in varying prices so they can decide.

If you really want, you can point out things on your registry that you didn't get or update your baby registry.

My family is like this too, they need to be told something to get or else they harass me. I speak to them indivdually when they ask and give them about 5 ideas of things she needs or wants and then tell them anything they see that they think she might like is fine too!..I would feel a little odd about sending out an email.....

If they asked I would send it to the people who asked and just say these are some things we thought she could use but anything else is OK too.
It would be weird to send it to random family member who didn't ask about getting her something but since they asked I think its a good idea.

I wouldn't send an e-mail, but when people ask what she "wants" tell them! I'm sure I'm going to wind up with an excess of toys this year. My SIL asked what I wanted for DD and I think that's the way to go. It makes it much easier to get/give things you need.

Re: QOTD...Christmas Gifts for your DC

in the past I have always asked my SIL for a list of things my nieces would like, as have other people in the family. we all email each other so she would email us a list, and we would coordinate amongst ourselves. i found this extremely helpful because i never had any idea what to get two little girls & i really wanted to get them a gift that they've been wanting. in my family, this is totally appropriate and has been done for years. so when they ask me for ideas for DD, i'll do the same, but only send the list to those that ask- again, in my family this is how we've done things. i'll put gifts in a different price ranges, but baby toys are usually pretty inexpensive. my family doesn't really do gift cards for the kids ever.

i guess it really depends on how comfortable you feel about it and how your family is.
