Please Tell Me I am Neurotic...

Okay, overall I haven't been stressing about the baby's health a great deal, but today I started to worry, so please tell me I am just having a neurotic hormonal moment.

Overall, I have been careful about what I ingest during this pregnancy. I haven't had any alcohol, don't smoke, gave up coffee, avoid the bad foods, and haven't had many medications.

But, I did use albuterol twice (I had an asthma attack for the first time in years one day). I also developed an ear infection and needed to take two different penicillin antibiotics (both are category 2). The first didn't help, so I had to take a second. I cleared all of these things with my doctor, but I am still concerned they may have affected the baby.

This is probably popping up because my Level II is on Monday. So far, my ultrascreen was normal. My quad screening, also normal. I don't know why I'm doing this to myself, but today I started worrying that these drugs may have done something.

Don't worry about it too much. Your dr wouldn't clear something that's harmful to your baby.

Just think about all the people who do hard drugs throughout their pg & have healthy babies (Anna Nicole, anyone?). You took medication so you could be healthy for your babyChat Icon

Thanks for the reassurance! I know, on some level that these thoughts are irrational, and if anything is wrong with the baby, it probably wasn't caused by my antibiotics or inhaler. As you pointed out, there is a big difference between these things and other kinds of drugs.

Must be the crazy hormones.

Don't worry too much!! Talk to waterspout (fellow PG poster). She has had to take asthma medications. Sometimes the benefit outweights the risks. I will be going on a medication to regulate my heartrate (just filled the Rx). I am nervous as hell but I decided that something that gives me the ability to breathe just might be important. Also, there was a ton of inaccurate information about my drug online, so be warned!!!!!

Yeah, you are right also. When I had the asthma attack, it was late at night, and I figured not breathing could NOT be good for the baby, so I needed to take medication to control it. The next day I had an appt. to see my doctor, and she said the medication I took was fine. Luckily, I haven't had one since then.

It is hard to weigh the benefits and risks as you said, but you are right--if you are not healthy, the baby will probably suffer too. And there are functions that are crucial--breathing, blood pumping, etc.

Think I'm just having a day.
