Buying a New Car- Do you Trade in your old one or do a private sale?

Hi everyone....

A question for you-

I have to get a new car in the next few weeks. I own my current car (just under 4 years old, low mileage, great condition).

I'm debating whether I should bother trying to do a private sale for the car or just trade it in.

Things to note:

1. I'm 4 1/2 months pregnant. I'm certainly mobile enough right now, but part of me just doesn't want to deal with a private sale as I get bigger and have to take people for test drives, etc.

2. However I am aware that a private sale would get me more $$ (about $2K more from what I can tell). The car I want is about $26K and my car is worth between $13K and $15K depending upon how I sell it.

Does anyone have any thoughts either way? I've done private sales on prior cars, so I know the drill. Perhaps I'm just being pregnant and lazy?

Opinions needed and appreciated!

i would do a private sale. you'll always get more on the street than you would at a dealer.

I agree, however....

It is very difficult and time consuming to try to sell privately.
I sold my car privately and don't think I would ever do it again. It was very time consuming and although I got a really good price, it was pretty stressful.
The buyer was a pain in the butt and called me after the sale to complain about the car after he barely looked at it presale.

Try to sell it privately for a while, and if it doesn't work out, trade it in. You'll lose $$ but you'll save your sanity.

we tried to sell our pathfinder ourselves- it was not worth it

people really don't buy used cars over a certain price IMO this way anymore

we ended up trading it in and saving on the tax

Interesting point- I hadn't thought about the fact that if it's worth that much as is, would more people just want to put that money towards a new car rather than buying an older one. It's not like this is a $5K bargain....

Hmmmm- great feedback, ladies. I really appreciate it!

Just more to think about...

we had a 2003 Pathfinder- personally I wouldn't pay $13K for someone elses problem- I would put $3K down on a new car

they make it so easy to buy a new car these days

the dealer ended up giving us $1K more then we owed- plus we saved on the tax- so we were happy and my DH got the car he wanted

We've sold three cars in the past 1.5 years in less than a week.
Try selling it on your own. I'm sure you'll get a bite soon.

I always sell my cars privately, but they are usually not worth $13K at that point. It is true that it might be difficult to sell but I would give it a shot for a few weeks. If nothing happens, just trade it in.

put it on craigs list- it's free- that's what we did- we had a lot of interest - but in the end- most people told us they decided to go with a new car

I think there is a price that people don't generally go over on a private sale - I would say it's around $5K

it's usually not worth it to get a used car loan b/c the rates are so high compared to a new car

My DH is a dealer. He always tell people to sell privately... The trade-in value is always lower because they need to service the car, clean it up and certify it before selling again, thus lowering the price.

I JUST went through this last week! It was a tough decision. I bought a new car and I did a TRADE of my old for a few reasons:
1. the sales tax savings sometimes makes up for the slightly less money
2. it's a bargaining tool with the dealer – I actually got what I wanted
3. NO HASSLE

May I ask how you used it as a bargaining tool? I mean, I get in theory how it can be one, but what did you say?
