I have one wall in my house the the original homeowners put up textured wall paper that you can paint over. It's pretty cool, or it would be had it been hung properly. But that's another way to go to if you don't know how to do it with just paint. I have seen the same paper at HD.

We did this one wall in our entry and I LOVE it! We used a colorwashing/fresco technique, really easy and great results.
This is what I wanted. Looks beautiful!

Thanks! we did it to separate our living room and the entry alittle as they are just one big area! I get TONS of compliments on it!
I followed the instructions from teh BM book for Fresco painting! Basically we have 3 colors of paint. The base is the same as all the other walls. Then we chose a deeper yellow and then the golden color (I think it was called squash by Behr).
The instructions were really easy. The only suggestion I have it not to use cheesecloth as recommended because if you look closely at my wall there are little tiny peices of the cheescloth.

You can also try a base color with a glaze over it. they actually have all sorts of decorative technique supplies at Sears. more than Home Depot and Aboffs has a lot of great stuff but a little pricier. Heres some pics I posted of decorative paint treatments
