Grand Mall Seizure: Community Rallies Against Another Long Island Mall

They say that history repeats itself, and here on Long Island, it seems to be true. I can remember, just over a decade ago, working for a local news provider and reporting on a story about local area residents “protesting” increased development in their area. Those residents lived in Syosset and the construction they were opposing was that of a mall.

Fast forward to 2007 and it seems we’re back to the same old drawing board. In fact, its being reported that a coalition of locals, including home and business owners in the Town of Oyster Bay are urging a developer to cease plans for an upscale mall in Syosset and instead consider their proposal for builder senior housing and shops.

The proposed development would feature a Marriott hotel, office and retail space, and 500 housing units in an assortment of apartment buildings and town houses.

In fact, the “battle” over what to do with the property has been ensuing since 2004. And, the company’s motion requesting that the State Supreme Court approve its application remains pending. And, officials from the development company note that regardless of what residents are proposing they are NOT the ones who own the land.

Still, the coalition has gathered over 4,000 postcard from local residents that they intend to present to the town Supervisor in an effort to put a halt to the proposed construction. And, they note that they are NOT opposed to building in the area, they simply want new construction that works with the flavor of the community.

The town Supervisor, notes that the request is not only viable but should be taken seriously and suggests that it would be a step in addressing the areas affordable housing needs.
