We all know that certain vehicles are prone to higher insurance rates (especially for certain genders and age groups) and others are more prone to theft. But, now, experts suggest that certain car parts are the latest target for thieves.

According to authorities, thieves are now going after catalytic converters, a part of the vehicle’s exhaust that helps reduce emissions and contains platinum and other metals that appeal to thieves, an worth at least $100 a piece at scrap metal yards. And, it’s likely that unless you recognize the noise, a loud sound made when you start your engine, you may not even know it was gone.

Still authorities suggest that the crimes are not too prevalent as of yet, since not many customers have been reported as looking for new converters. However, several (local) arrests in connection to catalytic converter crimes have been made since the beginning of the year.
